As I sit here typing this I am being distracted by the sounds of the Twitterverse. Sounds that are suggesting there is a big, “feel good” announcement coming out of Arsenal at 3pm this afternoon; sounds that suggest that not only are Arsenal in for David Villa, but the Spaniard wants to come; sounds that perhaps Theo Walcott’s departure from Arsenal is not the formality it appears to be from the outside.
I’m not sure if I’ve broken the rules of sentence structure with three semi colons in one sentence, but there you go. There is also the the less exciting news that, due to greedy tube drivers, Arsenal have had to postpone the Boxing Day derby with West Ham. Seems ridiculous that a London club would have to call off a match with another London club because of tube drivers, doesn’t it? Crazy times, folks.
Wait a minute- David Villa, he of La Liga’s top team and la selección’s top scorer ever, wants to come and join the Arsenal? Miles off the Premier League pace and two points behind Tottenham Arsenal? What the hell is that all about? Well, apparently the striker has fallen out of favour at Barcelona as Lionel Messi continues to rewrite the record books- Messi has scored more goals than Liverpool this year, in case you didn’t know. At 31 and relatively recently recovered from a broken leg, moving for Villa might seem like a risky- if typical Arsenal- signing. Yet, his quality is not in doubt and he is a mobile, lethal striker. Exactly the kind of striker I think we’ve all pined for a few years.
Nobody was ever really convinced by Robin van Persie, were they?
Okay, I jest. It feels weird to be thinking about taking a Barcelona player who is, you know, an adult- albeit an adult who you might conclude is a little bit past his best and it probably won’t happen. But I think it’s a good thing that we’re looking at this type of signing. If you could draw any conclusions from thrashing the worst team in the Premier League, the one I would take is that- quelle surprise- having a bit of mobility in the forward line is a good thing. A very good thing. Imagine the damage we would have done to Reading with someone like David Villa up front. Having Googled him, I am now reminded of summer chat that we were sniffing around him. It seemed fanciful then, less so now. Although, having been scarred by the Hatem Trabelsi debacle of, well, whenever it was… I’m generally scpetical towards any Arsenal transfer news. Until I see it on the official website a week after it’s happened.
Anyway, enough talking about something that won’t happen. Let’s talk about Klaus- Jan Huntelaar, the Schalke striker who is rumoured today to have- oh, he’s extended his contract apparently. Oh well. Doesn’t chime with information I had been previously given (not that I got it from a reputable source), but there again, having pleaded for some (Gervaisless) mobility in the forward line, I’m not going to cry about this one.
Onto the next one and, as I type this at 14;25 hours (sah!), thoughts turn, not unnaturally, to the announcement due at 3pm. Which probably won’t happen either. Joining the dots, it seems logical to assume that an announcement regarding Jack Wilshere’s contract extension could be in the offing. You will probably all have seen the @arseblognews tweet earlier today stating that it had been agreed. Could it be something else, though? Intriguing. Not to go on too much about it, because there’s a strong possibility I’ll look like a mug in about half hour’s time. Maybe we’re going to announce we’re about to sign Loic Remy, apparently he wants to join us as well. The crazy man.
Also on Twitter today, and if you aren’t on Twitter, you’ve missed out on one of the funniest, if ever so slightly childish hashtag treats of all time- ladies and gentlemen I give you #SpursQandA. Not to be missed entertainment, I promise you.
And on that note…
