Hello and welcome to what is the end of another day of not much news and a whole lot of unsubstantiated gossip.
The day started off with more stories claiming that Gonzalo Higuain had agreed terms with Napoli meaning that all of Arsenal’s striking eggs seemed to be loaded in to one bitey-basket. As expected, reports started to emerge from Spain that Real Madrid were now turning their attentions to luring Suarez to Spain and no matter what you think of Arsenal, you have to think that Real Madrid would be the option he would choose.
Then Marca came out with a story claiming that Higuain was hoping Arsenal would up their offer before claiming that Real Madrid hadn’t received any offers from anyone. It’s all confusing and the longer it goes on the more confusing it is becoming.
Of course, all of this is speculation at this point as it has been for most of the summer but you’d have to have blood cooler than Bergkamp’s if you weren’t a little bit concerned at how things look like they might play out. Still. At least Bendtner is back at the club. More on him later in the post because I know you’re all just dying to know what he’s up to.
Bernard, who it was claimed had agreed a deal which would bring him to London refused to be drawn on the speculation when he spoke to the press but rumours which emerged claiming Arsenal were set to meet with Roma in London over the future of Gervinho could mean that there is certainly some fire to all the Bernard smoke.
Could Arsenal, who already need reinforcements up front really let another one go without replacing? Wenger has said he is keeping Ryo at the club but it’s simply not feasible that we would replace an experienced player with a youngster.
Yes, yes. I heard myself.
Elsewhere one of the forward options we do actually have, Theo Walcott, was feeling a bit sorry for himself as he bemoaned how his top goalscoring achievements were largely overlooked. He is still irksome to me after his behaviour during that whole contract saga so I’ve perhaps been harsher on him than I would be on others. I’m not the only one, however, who has noticed a real change in his attitude.
Speaking of forwards and I remarked how quiet Nicklas Bendtner had been since he returned to Arsenal only to be pointed towards an article in the Shields Gazette which claims the frontman is blaming Arsenal for his inability to find a club. Never mind that Arsenal have agreed fees with at least six clubs, it’s their fault [and not his wage demands obviously] which is the reason he is said to be threatening to stay at Arsenal and see out the last year of his contract. I suspect this was his goal all along – money for nothing. Living the dream eh Nik?
Still the Asia tour continues and it seems as if the team are still having a great time. Spirit amongst the players seems high as this video shows and the indications ahead of the new season are that the team are united. The fact that they haven’t had to deal with an integral part of the team leaving is key but most of the senior players have spoken of the need to reinforce and Arsenal simply must do this. John Cross, the Mirror journalist who is on tour with the squad also remarked that he has never seen the Arsenal spirit so high. Good job we aren’t trying to sign a highly divisive/racist/bitey type player to disrupt all that. Oh wait….
On the injury front Wenger confirmed that Nacho Monreal has joined the every-growing list of cripples at the club. Out with a back injury no timeframes has been given for his return but when you read that he has been struggling with the injury for six months concerns rightly need to be raised about what we do to cover the left-back position. Good news on Koscielny though as it was confirmed he wouldn’t be out for any length of time with his ankle injury.
And injury’s are not just the reserve of players still at Arsenal. Johan Djourou, who injured himself just four minutes in to his Hamburg debut, has undergone surgery on his groin and will be out for at least another two weeks meaning he will miss the start of Hamburg’s season.
It’s all in the DNA.
And that’s your lot for today.
