It’s a long shot, a crazy tale and it goes against everything we’ve been led to believe about Arsenal and their ability in the transfer market, but take a walk with me down conspiracy lane. What else have you go to do?
Earlier this morning I asked the question on Twitter – What if Arsenal planned to unsettle Suarez enough that Liverpool would sell him more willingly to Real Madrid in order that Arsenal would be able to buy Karim Benzema with whom they have been heavily linked today? Well, this was my exact wording:
It all started out as just the ramblings of a crazy person doped up on cold meds but the more I thought about it the more it seemed to make sense.
Let’s look at what we know about the whole saga.
Arsenal were going hammer and tongs for Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain, so much so that it was widely reported that a deal had been agreed. Real Madrid then hiked up his price, Arsenal lost interest and turned their attentions to, of all people, Luis Suarez.
When news of Arsenal’s interest in the Liverpool player first surfaced we all laughed – why on earth would Wenger be interested in a player who has so much baggage and has caused problems wherever he went?
Arsenal bid, it was rejected, and even then most people weren’t taking Arsenal’s attempts to sign Suarez seriously. They bid again, this time an amount just enough to trigger what Arsenal were said to have believed was a release clause but done in such a way that it angered Liverpool to the point that they would never, ever sell him to Arsenal.
Suarez was unsettled, he ran to the media, he wants out. The only club he ever said he really wanted to join was Real Madrid but he’d take Arsenal as they were offering him Champions League football.
Now with the player ostracised at Liverpool, forced to train on his own and Rodgers demanding an apology before he could be let off the naughty step, the path was free for Liverpool to be able to sell him with the blessing of the fans – as long as he went to Real Madrid and not Arsenal.
All the while Real Madrid were claiming they didn’t want him so Arsenal were seen as his only option. More tantrums, more statements and the end result is that it’s hard to see how Suarez can stay at Liverpool but they certainly won’t sell to Arsenal – surely Arsenal must have known this all along.
Now we have Arsenal moving for Karim Benzema. Surely there is no way that Real Madrid would sell the striker after letting Gonzalo Higuain leave, not unless they were planning to replace him. But replace him with whom? Yep, you guessed it, Luis Suarez.
Suitably unsettled at Liverpool his price is bound to have dropped ever so slightly. While there is no way that Liverpool would sell him to Arsenal for £40m [or at all] they’d now quite happily take money in that region from Real Madrid and reinvest it in their squad.
And as a thanks, Real Madrid will throw Angel Di Maria our way once they land Gareth Bale.
A fancy tale, but one which makes more sense to me than us being interested in Suarez in the first place, jacking in our interest in Higuain, and chasing after a clause that didn’t exist in the first place.
For what it’s worth, La Liga expert Graham Hunter has just told TalkSport that Arsenal have a good chance of landing Benzema as Real Madrid want to use that money to fund the transfer of Luis Suarez [he said this after I'd started theorising].
It’s crazy, but is it crazy enough to be true? I guess you’d have to suspend your belief that Arsene Wenger, Ivan Gazidis and Dick Law are complete planks when it comes to the transfer market to start with. From there, well it would be just pure genius.
Conspiracies eh? How can you not love ‘em!
