One last chance Arsenal. One last chance.
It would seem, as we throw ourselves languidly into the final furlongs of the transfer window that Arsenal have one more roll of the dice. Or at least one last chance to get all those cards to align just perfectly as we look to beat the transfer window dealer and hit the jackpot that is a squad that can compete at the very highest level. The alternative? We leave the table empty handed having gambled it all in an an attempt to seize the day, our doomed exploits exposed in front of the Sky Sports News gawkers for everyone to see.
By the time that I pen my blog next week I’ll be dissecting what we have or, haven’t done in this the mother of all horrible transfer window. It could be amazing. I could be sat here in my monkey onesie with not a care in the world. We’d be showing off to all of our non Gooner mates about this shiny new Juan Mata that we’ve added to our our team, alongside this ever so lovely Iker Casilas that we’ve managed to nab from Real Madrid. Apparently they didn’t need Benzema or Di Maria either so we thought, if we must, that we’d give them a home to go to.
The thought of us rocking up to Madrid and taking what we please like a continental supermarket sweep seems ever so attractive and, obviously, extremely plausible. Yet as the Summer has dragged on and on without a signing you get the feeling that, you know, may be we’re not really in control of our summer transfer activity? Like, may be it’s not going to plan. I don’t know. I mean, may be Dick Law isn’t to transfers what Ryan Gosling is to phwwoooaaarr. I said it.
A quick glance up the road sees that lot acquiring players with the sort of ease and swiftness of timing that used to be the hallmark of Arsene Wenger in his peak years. On that I’m not too fussed, getting caught up in what they do is something we’ve long associated with the enemy and truth be told I’m not bothered at all. What I am bothered about is Arsene showing the world, one more time, just why he is Le Professeur.
I don’t want half of my footballing mates mocking my team and the other half, arm around shoulder, telling me
It’s such a shame, you only need a couple of players..
I want the same thing that the Arsene haters want. I want the same thing that the Football Manager kingpins and ITK twitter bigwigs want. The same thing every blog writer from here to Vietnam, India and back here again wants. Even the same thing that the guy who sits next to you in the stadium that still can’t seem to shake his hatred for Aaron Ramsey wants.
A competitive Arsenal squad.
I want Arsene Wenger to push whatever it is that seems to be handicapping us this transfer window to the side, take control and make his team competitive. I don’t think anyone here is asking for some Harlem Globetrotters like domination of English and European football, although that would be nice. I want to see a manager that I and millions of other football fans respect take control of his legacy to ensure that this season isn’t the nail in the coffin of the golden memories that we have of him when he finally does come to let the reigns go.
Like I said, one last chance. One last roll of the dice, Arsene.
Over to you.
I love Arsenal,
and I love you too.
