I was on Twitter earlier, as I tend to be, and someone who follows me tweeted to say that they hoped we got trounced in the Emirates Cup to send a message to the club. It started a conversation about ‘supporters’ who want the club to lose matches in order to, well, I’m not entirely sure what they want.
For me, saying that you want the club to lose so a point is made is madness. Why would you *ever* wish your club to lose? Would you really rather be right than see Arsenal succeed on the pitch and prove you wrong?
Think back to that 8-2 at Old Trafford. That was fun wasn’t it? Did it change anything? Some will say it forced us to act in the transfer market but I don’t believe that for one minute. Arsene and Arsenal have never panicked at one bad result, I don’t for a second think that the trashing at United forced us in to the market.
Arsenal are currently odds-on with Paddy Power to finish in the top four next season and that’s without even strengthening. Things aren’t anywhere near as bad as some people think and to wish that they get worse is just madness.
So what happens if you get your way? If Arsenal lose and you’re proven right? The club suffers, the fans suffer, but hey, you get the chance to say you were right so it would be worth it eh?
Are you prepared to put your money where your mouth is and bet on Arsenal’s first game of the season?
The guy on Twitter isn’t the first one to send me message hoping we lose. It makes no sense to me whatsoever. No matter what your opinion on Arsene Wenger or the current squad, whether you are an AOB, an AKB or somewhere in the more rational middle, surely as an Arsenal fan or supporter you should always want your club to do well?
People have messaged me saying they hope we miss out on the Champions League so that the club see just how much needs to change, but how much do you think is going to change if that happens? If we spent little while benefiting from Champions League money do you think that will improve if we don’t have it? If we have trouble signing big named players with the lure of Champions League football do you think we will fare any better if we are in the Europa League? Or not in Europe at all?
Instead of wanting the club to lose so that you can be proven right how about wanting them to win so Arsene can be proven right? You might not like him but surely him being right is much more beneficial to us all that you being the one who is the great know-it-all. Do you hate Arsene more than you love Arsenal?
Hoping that the team are awful so that you can be proven right about how awful the club are is just ridiculous.
In my humble opinion of course….
