Per’s new deal, Sagna concern and captain wants to stay

According to various press reports Arsenal are getting ready to offer Per Mertesacer a new contract with the defender’s current one set to expire in 18 months.

Mertesacker, who has established himself as Arsenal’s number on centreback, is currently on £65,000 per week and it is claimed that the new deal will be for four years and worth substantially more. I doubt you will find any Arsenal fans complaining.

This seems like a no-brainer but it makes me even more concerned that Bacary Sagna will not remain at the club when his contract expires in the summer. There is no sign of a new deal being signed by the Frenchman and there have even been reports that he has snubbed offers made so far. Sagna has been truly excellent so far this season, regaining the form he lost after suffering two broken legs in quick succession and it would be a real shame if he were to leave the club.

Thomas Vermaelen, meanwhile, has dismissed rumours that he wants to leave Arsenal due to the fact that he is not being player regularly, stating very clearly that he wants to stay and play for Arsenal. The club captain said

‘I’m still confident I can play for this club.  I keep reading stories that I want to leave. But that’s not the case. I’m still focused on the team. I am always positive.

‘In any case, it is not about my situation. It’s what the team do and I am really happy that we’re top of the league.’

Vermaelen has been assured by the Belgian national team coach, Marc Wilmots, that he will be included in the World Cup squad for Brazil next summer regardless.
