According to reports, Arsenal’s captain Thomas Vermaelen is close to a move to Manchester United for £11m.
The defender, who has just one year left on his Arsenal contract, has been the subject of intense speculation this summer given his inability to break up the centreback pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. It was initially reported that United were offering £6m for the Belgian and that Arsenal wanted £12m but the latest reports claim an agreement between the clubs has been reached.
To be honest, as much as I’d rather yet another player didn’t go to a Premier League rival, but I’m so far past even being remotely annoyed by this now.
A few weeks back, Vermaelen denied rumours that he was on his way to United but they haven’t died down, in fact, if anything, they have intensified which would lead me to believe that there is something to them.
Of course, deals can fall through at any time etc etc so until it’s official nothing is certain but it does seem as if Vermaelen will be on his way out of the club this summer. Given that Arsenal only had three recognised centrebacks last season, using Bacary Sagna as a stop-gap, they’ll need to make some moves in the market pretty quickly or we will be heading in to pre-season with just two recognised centrebacks, both of whom will be on holiday after the World Cup.
