The Daily Star are today reporting on their back page that Arsenal have agreed a fee with Newcastle United for French defender Mathieu Debuchy.
The piece claims that a fee of £12m has been agreed between the two sides and that Arsenal will announce the full-back’s signing after the World Cup.
Debuchy, 28, has recently said that he misses playing in the Champions League, something Arsenal can, of course offer him.
The Daily Star, not known for their reliability, do have historic links with Arsenal however. Their late editor was very close friends with Arsenal’s former chairman, Peter Hill-Wood. I’m not entirely sure what remains of those ties but they are running this piece as an EXCLUSIVE.
Debuchy would make sense. He is experienced and talented and will be able to slot in to the side without needing any time to get used to the frenetic pace of the Premier League.
Serge Aurier, the other full-back who has been heavily linked with Arsenal [mostly by himself] is still also being linked but it’s hard to tell if there is any real Arsenal interest in the player or if it is merely stories based on the player’s love of the north London club and his burning desire to play in red and white.
