Arsene Wenger has confirmed the signing of David Ospina.

Speaking to ESPN, the Arsenal manager said

You know at the start Szczensy will be the No. 1, then again we’ll be down to performances and, if Ospina shows that he is better, he will play.

The Nice keeper enjoyed a fantastic World Cup and is believed to be arriving after a deal worth €4m was agreed with the Ligue 1 side.

Earlier today it was reported that the goalkeeper said goodbye to his teammates in France and he is expected to arrive at Arsenal when the side return from their trip to New York where they will face Thierry Henry’s Red Bulls.

The deal shows no signs of stopping the press linking Arsenal with a move for Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas although you’d be doing well if you could find anyone who thinks that Arsenal are likely to sign both Ospina and Casillas in this window without shipping Szczesny out. As you can see, Wenger has every intention of keeping Szczesny as number one.

Welcome to Arsenal David!

Wenger also spoke about the last few years when Arsenal operated under tight financial restrictions because of the new stadium. He added

“It was a very different period because we built a new stadium and had to pay it back. We survived at the top level but we want more. We are now on an even ground with the other clubs than we were five or six years ago.”

Ospina is a brilliant signing. There were five goalkeepers who had excellent tournaments including Ospina, Howard, Navas, Ochoa, and of course Neuer.

Casillas is a great player and is taking way more of the blame for Spain’s World Cup failure than he should be, but if he wanted to play at Arsenal, he should have moved in January when Arsenal were looking for a quality second keeper with Fabianski headed out. With Ospina, who had a terrific World Cup, signed, Arsenal will not sign a keeper for Casillas quality to sit on the bench. Arsene Wenger just doesn’t engage in that kind of waste. No doubt Casillas’ agent is pushing the Arsenal link to drum up a taker for his tarnished asset.
