Sometimes it’s ok to be a happy Arsenal fan

So it seems that not everyone was happy with our win yesterday. It would appear that going to a ground where Man U and Chelsea have failed to win (along with everyone else who have visited there), scoring foul goals and getting three points just wasn’t good enough.

I’m not suggesting that all our problems are solved, but we gave more in the match yesterday than we did in the last few and that’s what I want to see. Unlike some of you, I believe this team DOES have the talent, it just sometimes lack the application.

I would suggest that some people could do worse than read this.

This comment by Wrenny was worthy of note: It’s disgusting the way these referees keep giving us all these decisions and gifting us goals, something must be done! To make matters worse, they are now denying our opposition perfectly legal goals just to put us top of the league!!! It is appalling, as a REAL Arsenal fan I want to see us in the relegation zone!

What is even more sickening is the way some sections of fans are actually HAPPY when we win matches! What is wrong with you people??? At some point we are going to lose!! Maybe not this week, maybe not next week, maybe not for quite a while in fact, but mark my words we WILL lose another game at some point and it will be UNACCEPTABLE.

What are you gonna do then, huh?? Admit it, you’ll make excuses and rationalise the glaaaaring problems in the team because of all those meaningless games we won!

(Sarcasm is fun)

In other news it is rumoured that Carlos Vela will be heading out on loan in January with his brother saying he is not a happy chappy at all. I can understand his frustration, but on the other hand, he has not exactly fulfilled his promise. I’m a huge fan of his, but I think it’s safe to say that he isn’t coming along as Wenger would have wished. You could say that he doesn’t get the game time to prove himself but we know with Wenger that if you do it in training you will get your chance of game time.

There was a story in the News of the World that Pat Rice is due to retire at the end of the season. The response to this from every gooner I’ve seen is that, while he has been an impeccable servant to Arsenal, the chance to freshen up the backroom staff and bring in a new number two would be something that could only benefit Arsenal. Steve Bould seemed to be the favourite of the fans to get the nod and you’ll have no complaints from me.

It has still to be confirmed by the club, but the story was picked up by Premierleague.com as well so make of it what you will.

Finally, it was a massive day for me on Twitter as I got a reply from Henry Winter!

RT @henrywinter: @ladyarse I was getting to Arshavin…probably his best game of season for #afc. Scored, created, ran his heart out. Needs that every week

Some of you non-twitterers may wonder what the fuss is, well the fact is Mr. Winter very rarely replies to ANYONE, EVER. In fact, he was on Twitter for quite some time before he deemed anyone else being worthy of being followed.

I am well and truly honoured.

Short and sweet today, there’s snow to be played in.

cock on LA, if you will pardon the phrase

    • Anonymous

Not sure I’ve heard that phrase before…is it a good thing? lol

      • Weedonald

Depends what type of cock he is referring to LA. If its a tiny Totts, spudsucker cock then that’s a grievous insult but if its the French National symbol of a cocky rooster then that is alright since ze Frenchies have done us proud.
Then there is always the slightly salubrious possibility that he is in love with you and is trying to sweet-talk you into a hot date by intimating some potentially hazardous activities which a good Irish Catholic lady like you would be strongly advised to forgo!
But my entire post is a cock-up and displays the cocky nature of our young cocks when confronted with the cockiness of WHL cock-gobblers claiming they are as good as the Arsenal..in which case the correct explicative would be ¨cock off you cock-less tiny Totts¨…I hope I have illuminated your innocent inquiry LA??

Let’s be honest it wasn’t difficult to give more in this match than the other two, especially the Braga game !The squad obviously has the talent but we do need to push on and keep moving forward and the three home defeats we’ve had weren’t against Chelsea, Man U and City were they ! I can take not winning trophies as long as we are moving in the right direction but the performance the squad gave in those defeats was not acceptable for a club of our size. Yes you can have an off day but to have three off days so far against that opposition smacks of a deeper problem.

I agree there is a mental problem with this team, have been saying it for ages, but it is that – mental. I still think the players themselves are more than good enough.

How do Arsenal fix that though, that’s the big question?

      • Anonymous

It has to come down to AW and without going over old ground I’m not sure some of the players are up to it. I’m sure I read that when he signs a player they not only have to be quality but they also have to have the right attitude, mental strength etc to fit into the Arse set up, so I’m not sure what’s going wrong ! We can’t be that hard up for cash that we can’t get a recognised name whether it’s a keeper, central defender or whoever. I think Kos will eventually cost us around £10m and he could be a world beater in a few years but another £5m and we would be able to get someone ready to do the business now ! We always seem to be saying it’s going to be our season next year !

        • Anonymous

Really… for 15m? Who? Kolo went for 15m, Lescott went for 22m and he isn’t even a starter for England or his club. Of the foreign talent, a player like Juan or Lucio is simply out of reach. the germans don’t need to sell as their league is booming and the Potuguese clubs don’t sell their talent cheaply… and anyone other than a well established name would be just as big a risk. The likes of Cahill and Upson are really not likely to lift us up at all… if Lescott is not good enough for City why should Cahill or whoever be good enough for us.

The problem with all these calls for signings is that they presume that signing are easy to make… even when you’ve identified the talent and spoken to the club the player himself can still say no… we tried for felipe melo and he said no… we even tried for Gorkan Inler and he effectively said no… so this idea that we are like Real Madrid or Barcelona and all we have to do is call any player and they jump is a tad deluded… to get a really top name to Arsenal it would either have to be a player like Arshavin who really wanted to come and join us or we pay over the odds, and there’s no chance of that with Wenger in charge.

          • Anonymous

You don’t think Cahill is a better bet than Kos/Squill at the mo ? Cahill has been doing it in the Prem for a few years, he knows what it takes to play in this league and would be able to hit the ground running. Roger Johnson’s getting rave reviews virtually every week do you think Kos/Squill is better than him ? If you want a cheaper than Kos/Squill option who is playing well and has Prem experience than how about Scott Dann ? Wouldn’t touch Upson with a barge pole – useless !

          • Weedonald

Johnny_11 is making some valid points but transfers are a far more complicated matter than even he outlines:

            1) The biggest roadblock to any renown international coming to the EPL is the UK tax rate…. EPL teams have to pay a salary that is roughly 14% higher than La Liga or other European leagues whose countries have lower rates.
            2) The second biggest roadblock is the physical nature of the EPL. Top internationals watch many EPL teams on their 170 mm wide screen TVs and see how pacey, physically demanding and downright brutal many games are here and how the press treats them.
            3) Players’ agents also can sink a deal by playing one offer against another and since they want the $$$ and don’t give a flying fook about the EPL, they’ll whore themselves to get $$$ by claiming that an EPL team want their client(s) and thereby raise the auction price. This is what Flamini’s agent did to Wenger in 2008.
            4) Some players don’t like the beautiful UK climate in January and some don’t like the fact that there is no winter break, and some are Cup tied and therefore far less attractive to an aspiring team like Arsenal, etc.
            5) Wenger has one of the best scouting networks in the world and his guiding principals for these scouts are two-fold: The player must fit into the Arsenal way and he must eventually be a potential international talent . Wenger wants to avoid the Manchestless Shitty dilemma of loading the team with superstar egos whose primadonna attitudes destroy locker-room harmony and never combine to produce team spirit and teamwork.
            6) The cost of bringing in a top class international is far more than the transfer fee. It is the salary and benefits and the agents fee, the bonus fees and so on. That is why Wenger and every other manager loves the free transfer.
            7) Most players who are over 25, and experienced, have families they drag along with them and sometimes this can become a real problem keeping the wifey and kiddies happy, especially if they don’t speak a word of English, like Arshavin’s wife. He solves that problem by giving her all his credit cards and telling her to go spendsky but it can be a major problem.

If all of the above isn’t enough, any transfer can run the risk of injury and a season ending operation, whether playing in the EPL or on international duty, which in Arsenal’s case, seems to be the norm rather than the exception. This costs the club a great deal and while it is an acceptable risk if a team wants a player, it can put them on the back foot like Vermaelen’s injury has done to the defense.
As Wenger said, the UK players are overpriced and there isn’t that much out there in other leagues worth buying unless you find a diamond in the rough or resurrect a career like Henry’s….but these guys are few and far between.

I think that the mental problem is related to inexperience… a more mature side with our ability would most probably not have let a 2 goal lead slip as we did against Spurs… but we have been playing CBs who have no real experience of the English league and also a lot our players haven’t really won things yet so for them the right balance between confidence and caution is a hard one to strike, I believe that the mental thingy will come with experience… it’s interesting that our three losses have all carried different lessons. Against West Brom the team just expected to win because West Brom had lost heavily to Chelsea. The Newcastle loss was a down to loss of concentration at one crucial moment in a game we dominated albeit without creating enough chances… and Spurs was down to a complacent second half performance… The Braga loss and the second half thingy with Villa I put down to a mixture of bad luck and the hangover from the Spurs debacle.

The bottom line is that this team have shown themselves to be very quick learners…We all have to be patient and look at the bigger picture IMHO. The fact is that we have played some outstanding football whilst being at less that full strength.

We’d also do well to remember that most of the blogs moaning about Arsenal not being top of the league by a fair margin, as we really ought to be if we’d won the game we should have, are the same folks who told us that we’d have no chance with the team we have, it’s very easy toi forget that some people gave us NO CHANCE… these are the people who dismissed the signing of both Chamakh and Koscielny, these are the folks who rubbished the talent of Walcott, Denilson, Diaby and Song; these are the folks who were so sure that this would be the season when we finally paid the price for not splashing the cash and fell out of the top four! Why should any Arsenal fan give some of these blogs any credibility? It seems to me that they are so egotistical that they’d rather be right than see Arsenal succeed. So the bang on about Song, Diaby, Clichy, Walcott, Djourou, Kosceilny or whoever no matter what these players do or how well they play. Sad really.

        • Anonymous

Quick learners I don’t think so ! They didn’t learn after the defeat against WBA did they or the defeats to Newcastle or the Spuds !

We should be clear at the top there’s no denying that and if we keep winning a couple and then losing a couple do you think we’ll make the top four because I don’t !

With regards to Chamakh he was banging goals in last years CL so he obviously had quality but hand on your heart had you ever heard of Kos ? I know I hadn’t !

      • puppyguts

the players should start by not openly blaming their poor performances on “CONCENTRATION” and “FOCUS”. as an arsenal supporter my main worry is how song is developing, hes our only agressive defender in the mid and seems to be developing a passion for attacking.

I love this blog because sometimes as fans we can get a bit too frustrated and not see the bigger picture and this blog does that. GO ON GIRL! ; )
