Brilliant stats (where do you get these?).
Arshavin’s scores no surprise – he was diaboloical. What other supposedly great players have such wretched performances? I can’t remember Giggs or Malouda ever having such stinkers. He’s a great talent but his inconsistency is revealing.
Denilson’s scores were a surprise tho’, except when you look at how many of his passes were pace- slowing sideways or backwards ones: JW adds much more urgency. He was also v slow to recover when he lost the ball, or his man. Good attitude but I’m not sure he’s a game saver, let alone a game changer.
We’re through, but our goals against record doesn’t inspire hope.

I think she has an app that gives them to her — UEFA have a site which posts all these stats and one more — how much they ran — guess who ran most? Robin. 11.8km. Second? Denilson, 11.4km, a kilometer more than Song. Your critique of Denilson’s passing shows a lack of understanding of the position he plays — behind the other two midfielders. or do you think it is his fault when midfielders pass back to restart or to engineer a switch to the other side. Denilson sent 15% of his passes back, compared to Nasri, over 20%, or Chamakh, over 30%. I think you came to the match certain that Denilson would play badly, you noticed the times he made errors, and you were surprised that your preconceptions were not matched by the data. My observatiobn is that I wish Denilson had more of the ball than Song — Song’s peripheral vision was very poor near the goal; Denislon’s was not. BTW comparing Denilson with JW, who plays a different position, is silly. Its clear that JW is not as strong defensively, or as exeprienced — and why should he be? Its no damning him to say this, but it is damning to him to deny it.

Arshavin had a bad day, although his passing stats are always low because they are also very high risk — one reason he produces about a goal a game this year for Arsenal. I think his age is a factor in how fast he can rec

A painful performance and not very reassuring should we meet the Spaniards or the Germans for that matter…however one ray of sunshine this season is that we can grind out wins even against crap teams like Partizan….even when we are not firing on all cylinders!
This game the Arsenal were firing with watercannons! I have rarely seen so many missed passes, bungling and spastic midfield efforts and tatically inefficient movement from the likes of Denilson,Song,Arshavin and company. the partnership of Chamakh and RVP shows promise but they were clearly not used to playing together and with the Gunners’ timing so off, they got little support or help until Walcott came on. Nasri worked very hard as usual but he couldn’t take on the entire Partizan team alone and the passing was so slow and telegraphed that even a crap team like Partizan were able to intercept and defend like they were geniuses.
It was a barely sufficient display from the team as a whole and had it been any one of the last 16, we would have likely been embarrassed tonight.

This was the Arsenal firing watercannons! Partizan had a very stingy and tight defense and the Gunners were spastic for most of the game until Walcott and Nasri began to press them for real. The partnership of Chamakh and RVP were uncoordinated and not syncronized almost the entire night but they did try all game. I cannot fathom the number of bad passes given to Partizan and the sloppiness of the midfield. Arshavin started his sleepwalking routine again and poor Fabianski must have been frozen to the bone he had so little to do in the first half. Our back four did a decent enough job of closing down a 2nd rate Partizan attack but overall it was like a bad practice game against opponents who had little to gain or lose.

  • Ignatz

Yep, you can tell that Arshavin was trying to make a lot of final balls that were cut out or missed their target. But the fact he completed so few may be an indication that he should have been more patient. Who knows… stats tell half the story, I didn’t see the game. Maybe his instructions were to try to penetrate.
