Arsenal Make it to Wembley Finally

Finals are a beautiful thing. I can say this now we’ve reached one for the first time since, what is it, one hundred years? What’s that you say? We last reached a final in 2007?

Oh, ok then,

Arsenal, being Arsenal, made sure that we were all nice and nervous by the time they finally put the game to bed. We were dominant, of that there is no doubt, but we lacked a cutting edge, and when Van Persie hit the woodwork after another great cross by Bendtner, you would have been a very brave person if you didn’t wonder, if only for the briefest of seconds, if this was going to be another ‘one of those days.’

It was Bendtner, who had received a lot of stick all evening (and I’ll hold my hands up, I was one of those asking for him to be replaced) who managed to control a long ball beautifully, take a touch which bamboozled the defender and then curl it in to the far corner. It was splendid goal and shows the potential he has. This is no time for negativity, so that’s where I’m going to leave it on the subject of Bendtner.

We were far better than in the first leg, not as good as we have been in matches since then, but it was always going to be only a matter of time before we broke them down. That Arshavin could have what seemed to be another horror-show yet still finish with two assists (and the credit for winning the corner from which our second goal came with his closing down) is a measure of the talent of the man. He worked his ass off, and while most things he touched fell apart, he never stopped trying, he never let his head drop, and he got his reward.

Well done Andrei.

And what of the rest? Well, we didn’t have Sagna for very long, his face meeting Chesney’s head resulting in a trip to casualty for the Frenchman and Eboue being brought on at right-back. Arshbend Denboue were on the pitch alongside half of Theo Van Nasregas for possibly the first time in history. Kos and Djourou were once again great at the back, Clichy was solid, Eboue was, well, Eboue.

The much-maligned Denilson put in a good shift, his tackling seemed stronger and his willingness to cover every blade of grass impressive. Cesc’s passing was sublime, his long balls hitting their target with ease, and he got a goal, something he enjoyed more than anyone else on the pitch. Jack Wilshere, voted Man of the Match on Arsenal.com put in yet another performance which belies his age. That he is doing all this at only 19 is a mouth-watering prospect. In the first half, Nik worked hard but nothing seemed to work for him, but the fact that he dropped himself back in to right back when Sagna was receiving treatment points to an awareness in his game that we maybe don’t see all the time. He was far more effective when he was switched to the left in the second half, enabling him to cut inside on to his favoured right. Van Persie showed his class with his work-rate, touch, vision, and if he’d only headed the ball down he’d have scored instead of hitting the woodwork for the 300th time this season.

What is great about this win is that we never gave up trying, Even when it was getting hard, when the crowd were getting restless, we keep pushing, kept pressing and the more Ipswich tried to push us back the harder we pushed in the opposite direction.

The relief around the Emirates was palpable when Nik scored the first. When Kos scored with what looked like the back of his head, the crowd started to truly believe that the run of bad-luck and bad finishing which had seen us fall at so many final hurdles in years gone past, might finally have run out.

But there is still the final to overcome. We’ve made it to Wembley, but there is still another match to play. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, but let’s enjoy the fact that we’ve made a final in a year when we are under even more pressure than normal to win a trophy. It’s the first final of the year that we could reach, and we’ve done that.

You really can’t ask for more than that can you?

In other news, Craig Eastmond has gone on loan to Millwall, Martin Angha has signed professional terms with the club and Wenger has said he would be ‘very surprised’ if we signed anyone in this window.

As @sianymacalarny said, it’s no wonder we don’t sign anyone – Wenger thinks it’s someone else’s job!

If you missed it earlier, you simply HAVE to listen to this interview with Richard Keys as he climbs in to the hole he made for himself and simply starts digging.

Nice to see a good positive blog – (more positive than mine, Lol). It was a bit wild when we scored last night, with people celebrating as if we’d just won the league! I think it was the relief more than anything else :-)

I had to follow the game on espns matchday live blog thing and everyone in the room was getting really nervous about the game. then BAM goal. and before we finished celebrating bendtner’s BAM there was another one. we thought he was pulling our leg. and after reading through your tweets LA i had a good laugh at the one where you were complaining about us not practicing corners.

btw, love the video section. get to see a lot of highlights that i wouldn’t normally get.

Well done boys good result in the end but you did have me a tad worried as we hit the 60 minute mark ! Great take and finish from NB52 it might have been “little old Ipswich” but that was a world class goal ! Ipswich deserve great credit over the two legs and how they find themselves in the lower half of the Championship I have no idea ! What I do know is if they carry on playing like that they’ll be fine !

I take on board what you say about AA but his slump is going on far too long. He’s been given playing time to play himself out of this hole and I’m surprised it’s taking this long !

Hammers or Blues ? For me it has to be the Blues no strike force to talk about and Scott Dann out for the season. They”ll do for me !

It will be great to see the boys at Wembley again and to see Jack out there at 19 in an Arse shirt is just brilliant ! There is no point in getting there and not bringing it home, so let’s get the attitude right and get the job done. One word of caution, Luton 88 ! That was the one Cup Final that when I woke up that morning to get ready for my trip to Wembley I thought this is in the bag and boy was I wrong !

So finally we are into a final and each one of players played a part in it.The defense was faultless yesterday and were rock solid.Jack seems to improving leaps & bounds with his passing.RVP had a good game and did his customary job of hitting the wood work.Cesc was magnificent is well and grabbed a well taken goal. And finally the three players who r getting a lot of stick from the fans.Denilson-He was not at his best but played a good game without any major errors and it was his interception that started the third goal.Bendtner-Was poor IMO in the first half except for one great cross to RVP and in the second half he improved & showed that he is indeed a Big Game Bendtner by scoring a outstanding goal.Arshavin-Typical Arshavin game but you can clearly see the extra efoort he is putting in and grabbed a couple of assists as a result. So overall a great game and Wembley is waiting for us now.Come on Gunners…!

Half way through the that Richard Keys interview. It’s awful. Why do I finding myself squirming into my chair? Desperate but you can still hear how full of himself he really is.

Here is an excellent blog on why the Gunners seem to be serious this year: http://www.arsenalnews.co.uk/a-few-things-i-realized-about-arsenal-this-week/link/65234/

I added additional comments as follows:My sincerest compliments to you Haider…this was an excellent blog and the closest to commonsense accuracy I have read outside LadyArse’s blog! There are other elements that seem to be falling into place this season as well:

1)The financial and management stability of the club since Wenger’s arrival in 1998 has us now held up as the Club to emulate worldwide for financial and administrative nous. this fact alone will entice top class candidates to come to Arsenal.
    2) Arsene Wenger’s stable, intelligent and long term vision and strategy both on and off the field has allowed us to improve our bench, bring in even more promising youth talent, play OUR Football instead of experimenting with hit and run or park the bus tactics like lesser teams.
    3) The Emirates’ supporters influence which was a bit of a curse at the start of the season BUT has become our 12th player when we are home OR away. We still seem to attract negative and pessimistic so-called Arsenal fans whenever we win, lose or draw, like flies are attracted to offal. However we are making believers of most!
4)We seem to be getting equal treatment from game officials unlike some years and I am firmly convinced that Wenger’s respectful, uncritical and anti-thud attitude to EPL play has turned the tide for us when it comes to diving, serious foul play and the need to protect all EPL players from assholes like Dwyer,Barton,Shawcross and Co.

By the way I corrected typos in this version!:)
