Arsenal must grasp their second chance at Leeds

Leeds tonight in the FA Cup replay and most of the news around today is about Denilson and his comments regarding a lack of leadership at the club. Mass confusion reigned on the internet this morning as everyone and anyone accused people of stealing content while others were tearing Deni apart for his reported comments.

I’m not going to go in to it too much, if you want the full story, head over to arseblog.com. Cesc has already tweeted to say that Denilson’s comments were taken out of context or mistranslated and there’s no issue, so it warrants no further scrutiny at this point with a match so close. There will be plenty of quiet days in which we can discuss the merits of a statement which claims Arsenal have no leaders, not even Cesc. Until then, let’s focus on the match at hand.

It’s not often in life that you get a second chance at something when you’ve already screwed up, but the beauty of cup football is that sometimes, if you’re lucky, you will be granted an opportunity to gain salvation. Arsenal have this chance tonight, and it is one that you could argue they don’t deserve. Leeds played very well in the first match, and only a last minute penalty saved our asses.

But, that is the beauty of cup football and the margins you play with. We have another chance to put the first performance right, and Arsenal fans expect nothing less than 100% from a team who have flipped and flopped when it comes to giving their everything this season.

Lining up we know that Chesney will take the place of the injured Fabianski. At the back, due to the fact that we have little other option, we will see Kos and Djourou line up as the centre-back pairing. They will more than likely be flanked by Gibbs and Sagna, the latter returning from his suspension and the former coming in to give Clichy a rest. No Eboue sounds good to me.

In midfield I have a feeling we will see Song and Cesc, but if Jack will be involved after being arrested last night for being part of a group which was involved in an altercation with a cabbie I’ve no idea. Would he be too distracted? I don’t know, but I do know that Song/Denilson is a partnership in midfield that doesn’t allow us to show our football in its best light.

Up front, and it’s anyone’s guess. Personally, I wouldn’t play Bendtner as his form has done nothing to warrant a start in what is almost a must-win match. We have the option of Chamakh, or Van Persie, or even Vela and at this point I’d prefer one of those three to the great dane for this match. Out wide, Rosicky is due back but no hint has been given if he’ll be involved. No doubt, the out-of-form Arshavin will be included and if Theo doesn’t start he will be on the bench with the rest of our big hitters.

If you remember, Wenger has said that we are seriously going for all trophies so if we don’t have our strongest 11 out tonight, I expect the majority of those first choice not starting to be on the bench.

The last thing we need in this match is extra-time so it would be pleasing to see Wenger start with a strong line-up to get the tie put to bed as soon as possible. then rest when the tie is safe.

Will he? Your guess is as good as mine.

Whoever plays, we once again need 100%. I’m getting slightly sick of writing that sentence to be honest. In every match preview, the same thing, over and over again, with the only difference being the opposition. We know that if we turn up and give everything we will win, but we have witnessed Arsenal turn up thinking the win is already in the bag too many times this season. Just once, it would be nice to know which Arsenal side is going to show up.

You think that the lesson has been learned, you think that beating Chelsea would show that working hard and defending all over the pitch brings rewards, but it seems that only half that lesson has been learned. Do it against the bigger opposition, sure, but the ‘lesser’ teams? Well, the same old arrogant Arsenal is more likely to show up than the team we saw put Chelsea away as if they were nothing.

It’s annoying to say the least.

So what else is there to say that I haven’t said one hundred times before (and that’s just this season)? Nothing really. It will be a very hard match, there will be a hostile crowd, and we just simply have to want it more than them. Do that and we win. Don’t and we’re out on our asses and no longer the only team in England who can win all four trophies.

It really is that simple.

In other news, reports of Bendtner going on loan or being sold for £15m to West Ham seem to have been dismissed by the player’s father. Speaking to Ekstrabladet he said:

“That’s not interetsing. If Arsenal want to sell and have a set price then that is up to them. That’s nothing we have been involved with. I can only say that thus is nothing of interest to us”.

See. He’s not interested. I’m not sure what role Nik’s father plays when it comes to his career, but as we saw with Cesc’s dad over the summer, they don’t always know what’s going on. That being said, Arsenal would not let him go as that would leave us with two strikers plus Vela. Hardly ideal especially when you consider one of the players is made of tissue paper and the other is in his first season in the premier league.

For those who love the Arsenal Podcast and were saddened to hear that it had fallen away, you can now listen to the latest episode of the new show, entitled ‘The Tuesday Club’ here and you can follow them on twitter @YellowBootsOn. Thanks to @JamieDalton82 and @YoungGunsBlog for the heads up on this.

Interesting from Twitter:

RT @Optajoe: Arsenal have won their last three trips to Elland Road to play Leeds by a 4-1 scoreline.

RT @Orbinho: Only one of the last eight matches between Leeds and Arsenal has ended as a home win and five were away victories.

RT @Orbinho: The last four times Arsenal & Leeds have been drawn together in the FA Cup, the eventual winner of the tie has triumphed on their opponent’s turf.

There is nothing new to comment is well. All we need is a Spirited performance and a Victory. No matter whether it is Theo Van Nasregas or Arshbend Deneoue they should give their all today

  • Gary

As I said previously I used to enjoy reading your blogs. Only recently you have started going the way of the negative Arsenal bloggers. Take this portion as an example “Arsenal have this chance tonight, and it is one that you could argue they don’t deserve. Leeds played very well in the first match, and only a last minute penalty saved our asses.” This is bs. The only differences between the two teams on the day were that Leeds’ penalty came earlier than ours therefore we had to come from behind and their goalkeeper kept them in the tie. Arsenal did not play that badly and are definitely not “lucky to still be in the tie”. Yes they did not wrap it up as they should have. But the glass is half full, not half empty. Please do not follow all those negative bloggers out there.

Gary, I’ve no plans on following the negative bloggers and their paths, but I do think that I am allowed to be dissapointed sometimes. This doesn’t mean that my overall attitude towards the club or the team has changed, just that sometimes I am feel let down. It can be hard to defend players week after week after week to then watch some of them seemingly not care.

I agree that Leeds keeper kept them in the tie, but the fact still remains that we couldn’t break them down and it was a penalty which saved us. Had we not got that penalty, would we have been able to break them down from open play? I don’t know.

I am only human, and sometimes even I can struggle to be upbeat, but I do take your comments on board and will keep an eye on things as I don’t want to be know as a miserable sod, even though I can be one quite a bit lol :)

      • Gary

LadyArse Remember it was also a penalty which gave them their goal. They did not outplay us in any manner. As we agreed only a number of excellent saves by Smeichel kept them in the tie, but yes we were not able to break them down on the day. The bit in your blog that I have a problem with is where you state that Arsenal do not deserve the second chance, implying Leeds were unlucky not to win the first time round. Keep up your good work and stay positive.

regardless of circumstance, any team is lucky when they score in the last moments of a game, get a grip

Right on the money Puppy :)

          • Gary

Oh? BS again. Look at the stats, possession, shots, on target, tackles, etc etc. these count for nothing? Just because our goal came in the last few minutes in is lucky. Crap. If you like to see the glass half empty – go ahead. I am sick of the negativity of the Arsenal bloggers and fans. Moan Moan Moan – seems to make you feel better. What are you going to find to moan about last night’s performance. I am not English and am beginning to wonder if it is an English thing to be so negative about your own.

          • Anonymous

You’re right Gary they count for nothing ! You would expect the Arse to be ahead in all the things you mention ! We were at home, a league above them and have better players than them ! We turned up thinking that would be enough to win and it nearly cost us ! If we had played like we did last night a replay wouldn’t have been required. You talk about negativity, when I see us dropping points and not playing well against teams we should be turning over you bet I’m going to get pissed. If you’ve been paying attention to the results we’ve had this season you’ll know there are around 10 or 11 games this season in all competitions when he haven’t bothered to turn up !

          • Gary

I actually think that there was very little difference in the way we played the two games against Leeds. Last night goals went in which didn’t go in a week ago. Please watch the two matches again. Seems to me that you watched the scoreboards only and not the matches. We were unlucky not to win against Leeds first time round, not lucky to draw. But if it makes you feel better to moan, nothing I say will stop you. However, I guarantee you you will actually enjoy your football so much more if you stopped whining. Try it, you will be surprised.

          • Anonymous

The difference between last nights performance and the first game was massive. I think you’re the one who needs to watch both games again !

You didn’t mention anything about our piss poor performances that I alluded to. In case you’ve only been supporting the Arse for a week or two watch the Pool, Braga (A), Sunderland, WBA, Shakhtar (A), Newcastle, Spuds, Man U, Wigan, Leeds (first game), and Ipswich games and you tell me I have no reason to moan ! In all those games we turned up thinking that turning up was going to be enough. As an Arse fan that’s not acceptable to me and shouldn’t be to you, but if you’re happy with those type of performances fair enough !

          • Grboy

Listen buddy – I complained about Lady Arse saying we were lucky against Leeds. Now you are going on about Pool, Braga etc etc etc. Against Manu we were by far the better team and damn unlucky to loose. As I said before – obviously you enjoy moaning and whining. Nothing I can say will help you – so I give up. It is just such a pity that people like you spoil things for the majority of us who are very happy to be supporting a fantastic team and the world’s best manager.

          • Anonymous

Oh it’s you Gary ! Bar far the better team against Man U you have got to be joking that just goes to show you know nothing about football. At the end of the season if we miss out on the title by a point or two then you can look back at those games mentioned and see where we missed out. I do hope we win the title though and then you can tell me I know fuck all !

If this was one big love in on here it would be pretty boring wouldn’t it ? Please feel free to start your own blog I would love to rip your blog to pieces but then again you could always delete my posts to make yourself look good !

      • Anonymous

No way you can be accused of being a miserable sod ! You stand by the team more than you should sometimes and always look to give them the benefit of the doubt when others steam into them. Don’t take his comments on board just write the way you’ve always done.

        • Anonymous

          Cheers Skid :)

And also, look at that sentence – “The only differences between the two teams on the day were that Leeds’ penalty came earlier than ours” – we are going for the Premier League and are a Champions League side, there should be more difference between the sides than just the timing of penalties.

As I have said many, many, many times, if Arsenal give 100% I don’t care if we lose every single week. I just want to see them actually playing as if they care. This season there have been a lot of matches where some players in this team I love so much don’t seem to and this hurts. There is only so long I can ignore that.

But again, I do take your comments on board and will pay more attention to if I’m moaning for the sake of moaning, or because I have just cause to do so.

With the mighty Wigan at home on Saturday I think we should be able to do extra time if needed !

I’ve seen plenty of games at Elland Road over the years and really like the stadium and they can generate a great atmosphere but turning up with the right attitude will counteract all that. I think it was after our last Prem title we played them the following season and absolutely blew them away. I was in with the Arse fans that day and think we were 3-0 up after twenty minutes “That’s why we’re champions” and “Go home, you might as well go home” rang out, to be singing that song after twenty minutes was brilliant ! Think we ended up winning 5-1 in the end. Great journey home for me, not so good for my best mate who had to do all the driving after seeing his team get “Goonered” !

Yep, we had a better team back then, but then again the Leeds team was better then than it is now so turn up with the right attitude tonight and we’ll get the win !
