Arsenal’s new attitude will lead them to glory – if they remember it every week

What a difference an attitude adjustment makes. A team starting with practically all the same players as the one which was so atrocious at Ipswich, yet they swallowed a large dose of ‘give a f**k’ and look at the difference it made.

I can have no complaints about anyone last night. Even the much-maligned Denilson, Bendtner, and Arshavin especially worked their asses off the entire night, and even when things weren’t going for them, they still kept trying.

That’s all I’ve ever asked.

From the start to the finish we showed that we wanted this as much as Leeds, and with the better talent at our disposal, with matched attitudes, there was only going to be one winner, much to ITV’s disgust.

That they spent the entire match praising the Leeds supporters for their noise level, when all I could hear was the 3,000 Arsenal fans constantly drowning out the 35,000 home supporters, was indicative of the Leeds love-in they were having. It was an enormous performance from the away fans and it deserved to be acknowledged by those idiots at ITV.

Not so unfortunately. The way the commentators celebrated what was admittedly a very good goal from Leeds was to scream as if they haed just won the FA Cup itself. The disappointment when we nodded home our third to kill the tie was palpable.

That they were disgusted we won just makes it taste all the more sweet.

So what was the difference? Some will say it was the inclusion of Nasri as captain, others will say it was Sagna at the back, or simply that Eboue was nowhere around, but while that might be part of the story, the truth is it was in the Arsenal attitude. We fought, we hassled, and as Leeds broke and Nasri chased back 60 yards with everything he had, he summed up the spirit in the whole team.

If we play every single match like that, there is no reason why we can’t collect at least three of the four trophies we are currently going for.

I must give an honourable mention to a few players. Firstly, Arshavin, who I’ve been very hard on recenlty. I know he has the talent but that has rarely been matched by his work-rate. Not so last night. While everything he touched seemed to go in the opposite direction of where he wanted it, he never once let his head drop and could be found all over the pitch, attacking, defending, hustling and harrying. If he keeps up that work rate, his form will return, of that I’m sure. Super Andrei, really super.

At the back, the difference in Kos when he plays alongside Djourou is immense and I thought Kos had a fantastic game.

Out wide, even Bendtner put in a really good shift, and it is only fair that if I am prepared to criticise him I praise him when it is appropriate. His first touch is still not the best, but for the majority of the match he could be found on his toes rather than on his heels which is how he has spent the last few matches. Good effort Nik. Seriously.

I don’t need to give you reasons why Sami was something else last night, or the difference the introduction of Cesc and Van Persie made. Their class is evident for all to see, and with Van Persie rapidly hitting world-class form, we can start to dream of glory.

It is a good day to be an Arsenal fan.

Does that seem too much? I don’t think so. Cold January nights ‘up norf’ are supposed to be our achilles heel, but we overcame this one with ease. All because we truly wanted it. I’ve never doubted the skill and talent of our players, even the likes of Denilson, but I have questioned their attitude and I think with just cause.

But that’s two matches in a row now that we’ve put in a shift as a unit, as a team, and we’ve scored six goals and only conceded one because players seem to like to score the goal of their careers against us. Two Chesneys in our goal weren’t saving that, and while I know he will be annoyed that we failed to keep a clean sheet, sometimes you simply have to hold your hands up and say ‘unstoppable.’

But there we have it, in a nutshell, all the proof this team needed that if they want to win things they have to work for it. Signing for Arsenal does not represent the pinnacle. You have not made it when you pull on the red and white shirt.

That is when the work truly begins. Finally, I think our players have got the message and for the first time in a long time I look forward to a match thinking we might really give Wigan a pasting this weekend. I don’t fear that the old Arsenal might rear its head, of course it might, but I don’t think so.

Once that tiny little switch in your head flicks to the on position, it can be really hard to turn off. I think that finally, finally, we might have found the right switch.

Good day people. Good day.

(Apologies for the short blog today, as you might have noticed, a few of my websites have been having serious technical issues which has sort of thrown everything off kilter. Things should be working properly now, but if you see anything that isn’t, I’d appreciate it if you could give me a heads up.)

We’ve seen them display this attitude before then revert back to complacency, e.g. after Chelsea, but let’s hope you’re right and they don’t revert this time.

Bendtner did as well as he could considering he hasn’t the physical attributes to play out wide, and it’s a mystery why Wenger so often puts him out there. Perhaps it’s to develop his ‘all round’ game.

The talent is there and whilst the defence will always be shaky under Wenger, with enough application perhaps that can be compensated for in some measure and we can win something this season.

    • puppyguts

      i don’t subscribe to this notion that we will always have a shaky defence. if verm was fit and playing next to djourou, i think a back four of;

      clichy verm djourou sagna

represents one of the strongest backlines in the country,

      • puppyguts

there arn’t alot of teams that wouldn’t have these players in there starting lineup

      • Jekyll

They’re all good individuals, but the way we play, with the high line and full backs as wing backs, with a DM that also joins in attacks, means we’ll always be exposed at the back. It’s the price you pay for an all out attack approach.

        • puppyguts

thats fair enough but i would hardly describe our defence as shaky, especially off the back of three clean sheets

        • Weedonald

The high line, attacking fullbacks (wingbacks) and the attacking DM has always been a trademark of Wenger’s teams since his Monaco days. The real issue here is our inability, until recently, to be able to rely on the likes of Arshavin,Denilson, and Bendtner to track back and support the wingbacks or an out of position DM like Song. It has also exposed us on set pieces when Fab or Almunia were in nets as the fullbacks had no idea if or how either keeper would react or even whether they could react. With Sczensy at their backs, they know all 6’5¨ of Polish confidence will bear down on any high, loose ball into the area if they don’t. We still need a similarly aggressive CB to command the back 4 BUT at the moment our defensive ability has given us 3 clean sheets in the last 6 games and 3 victories, 2 ties and 1 loss….not too bad for January!
I doubt we’ll see Vermaelen before the run-in if at all so a long-term CB transfer would boost Arsenal’s chances enormously because with 4 fit and effective CB’s we can tighten the defense, which is the key to winning trophies and titles this or any other year.
We are currently leading the league in goals scored and with RVP, Walcott,Nasri and Fabregas playing like they are, we are a constant threat anytime during any match, home or away. The other top 4 clubs have each conceded 19 goals so far in EPL play, we have 22 (only 3 more) and while we have lost only 1 more than City, we have tied only 4 games so our offense is the best in the EPL. We have played 7 of our 8 games against the other top 4 already and have doubled last season’s points tally so we are definitely headed in the right direction.
Having said all this, I agree with LA about the starting 11′s attitude which seems to be far more aggressive, hungry, confident and positive despite some slip-ups. AW is always talking about belief and maturity and finally he may actually have them approaching that cherished goal!

  • puppyguts

playing bendy on the right seems to be finally paying off, having sagna there completely owning the entire right side gives bendy licence to drift more centrally, this set up is pure genius from the professor

I didn’t see the work rate you saw with AA I’m afraid. I just saw him all over the pitch giving the ball away ! There has to be something wrong there for him to play this badly for so long ! I saw a piece today linking him with a move back to Zenit, it might be paper talk but there might be something in it.

I did find myself shouting at Strachan last night when he said we didn’t get the free kick because AA went down in the box to easily. That wasn’t the foul Gordon ! The foul was him being pulled back and he gets paid to give his opinion !

Again time ticks on and no CB signing. Why take it to the wire, why not bring someone in on day one of the window for a change !

    • puppyguts

AA workrate is the only thing keeping his head above water. a dip in form is probably the best thing tht could have happened for andrei as it teaches him he can’t always rely on talent alone to get him through games. i hope he keeps pluggin away and doesn’t get dragged down by negative reviews.

    • Weedonald

Relax Skid64 …..Wenger knows you’re stressed and is enjoying doing this to all of us backseat drivers, it is a French thing or at least a Wenger think!!! :)
You must know the drill by now………….he’ll keep us in the dark, with bated breath, while dropping tiny hints and innuendos about maybe, possibly, in the worse case, if the sky falls,,,,he might look at brining in a CB capable of playing goalkeeper and defensive midfielder at the same time and not being cup tied…IF Vermaelen proves to be terminally Belgian or worse still, out for the next 25 years!

      • Anonymous

I think we play 9 games in January it just seems to make sense to get someone in around day 1 or 2 rather than day 30 or 31 !

    • Grboy

Here you go again. Whine whine whine. As Weedonald suggests, why don’t you relax and let Wenger handle things. Or do you believe you would do a better job than him. In that case I suggest you write to the club and offer your services. Perhaps the club won’t have to pay you as much as they pay Wenger and they will jump at the opportunity to get a more knowledgeable person in and save money at the same time. Just know one thing if you do get the job, every a**hole with a keyboard will think that he can do a better job than you.

      • Gary

The change in name was an accident relating to my email address.

      • Anonymous

Sorry who the fuck are you meant to be ? I just said I couldn’t see his work rate and stated for a quality player like him to be off the boil for so long there must be something wrong ! I mention an article in the paper linking him to Zenit, didn’t say I wanted him to leave and didn’t blame him for their goal !

In case you’ve only been following the Arse for a week or two you do realise that we’ve had around 10 or 11 crap performances this season. Check back on my previous posts and you’ll see I’ve listed them for you. You happy about those dropped points ? What about the Spuds game (Spuds = Spurs in case you didn’t know !) at the end of the game after we’d lost 2-3 did you have a good weekend, because I didn’t !

If you’re paying so much fucking attention to what I write, you’ll notice I do give them credit when I feel it’s justified !

With regards to knowing more than Wenger and writing in for his job are you 7 years old ? What I will say is that I could have won as many trophies as him in the last 5 years, no problem !

When you’ve had your afternoon nap I’ll look forward to your reply !

        • Gary

I am sick and tired of idiots like you who reckon they can do a better job than Wenger and the team and that supporting a team gives you the right to constantly criticise. He has just been voted the best manager in the world by people who are real experts and a fucking know-all wants to tell us he can do a better job. I suppose we should ask Wenger to write and thank you for giving the team credit when you “feel it is justified”.

          • Anonymous

You woke up with the hump didn’t you ! Where did I say I could do a better job than AW ? In the last five years we’ve won nothing, that’s what I said I could have won nothing, or did you think we had won something !

I don’t constantly criticise if you look back at my posts there are plenty that are positive. Just look at the latest one !

I’ve supported the Arse for 40 years, not 40 months mate invested a lot of time and money and that does give me the right to criticise them, you can to if you want but your obviously happy with the way things are going !

If you want to keep this going fine keep it going, you want to knock it on the head, knock it on the head, your choice !

  • Rick Martin

It’s not ‘might of noticed’! Where’s the sentence construction in that? It’s ‘might have noticed’ or ‘might’ve noticed’

  • Blueybarnes

I don’t think it is ITV, just Clive Tyldesley in particular who always seems to give sly digs about the Arse. He can barely contain his anti-Arsenal views nor his love for ManUre when commentating on their games. The fact that Arsenal bossed the game and Leeds barely had a sniff barring their wonder goal (provoking commentary hysteria) was lost on Clive. He seemed to think that we were rocked to the very core and made the game out to be much closer than it actually was.
I thought Strachan was very complimentary on Arsenal and even called Song the best defensive midfielder in the league! (Nearly ginge, nearly)
Btw, I always look forward to reading your blog, I’ve just been lurking in the shadows and never commented until now.

A well deserved win for Arsenal (Leeds fan here)

The first goal was the killer, as the first few minutes we were chasing everything down and the atmosphere was scary. The first goal chilled them out and reinforced their ability in their own minds.

We saw two goal keepers who are going to be plying their trade in the premiership for years to come, with Schmeichel’s save from Chamackh especially saving us from a drubbing.

Best goal was Johnson’s followed closely by Van Persie’s.

Oh, and please don’t be silly about Arsenal fans drowning out Leeds. Yeah, you got a few chants in here and there but to compare it to the noise we make (something we’ve had to celebrate over these last few hard years) is just ridiculous. Sometimes you should just accept that when commentators don’t agree with you it’s not because of their bias but yours. And this is coming from a man who HATES ITV coverage of anything.

Can’t wait to play you next season, congrats.
