Deadline Day, Done Deals, and Denilson

No time to dwell on yesterdays match, we have another one tomorrow (nice scheduling FA, thanks) and the prospect for people without tickets in the UK of watching the next three Arsenal matches on an illegal stream as none of them are on the TV.

I guess it’s not like we are second in the league and the only club that can win all four trophies or anything like that huh?

Deadline day today with the transfer window closing at 11pm tonight, and, at the time of writing, there has been no movement at Arsenal, apart from a few kids going out on loan. There was one rumour that Man City were looking at bringing in Almunia so that Given could leave but there’s nothing more than that at the minute. With the news that Fabianski might need surgery on his shoulder, and Mannone at Hull until the end of the season, it’s a big call to let Almunia go. While I’ve been flippant in the past, the thought of having to play Shea for a run of games should anything happen to Chesney doesn’t really bear thinking about, so even I think we should consider holding on to Almunia ‘just in case.’

I know, who’d have thunk it huh?

The injury news from yesterday isn’t all that encouraging. With Nasri set to have his scan today, reports across various media have him out anywhere between two and six weeks. Two we can manage, hell, we can manage six as well, but it would be a massive blow, Having the season of his life, when he combines with Fabregas, Theo and RVP, it transforms our side and will be a massive miss.

Denilson is also out with a hamstring problem, presumably the one he pulled up with yesterday but was able to carry on with. I’ve watched football for over 30 years and I cannot recall a single player who pulled a hamstring and then was running properly a few minutes later.

It really is a strange one.

The player himself had this to say regarding playing on after he was injured:

“My leg, it feels a little bit sore but I think in three days I’ll be back to training normal. When Rosicky passed to me in the box when I’m crossing to him I just go out and he said if I didn’t come back we was nine on the pitch and I said to him it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter if I feel it more, I need to, I wanted to play and he said ok.”

That may not be an exact transcript of what he said, there was some mumbling and I have dodgy ears, but you should get the jist.

That means that going in to tomorrow’s match against Everton we will be without Nasri, Denilson, Fabianski, Vermaelen and Squillaci.

What makes things slightly more laughable is the crying ‘Arry did after his team’s FA Cup humiliation about their injury crisis. Take a look at the table here (which hasn’t been updated with our new injuries) and you see that there really is nothing at all between the injuries they’ve suffered and the ones we’ve had to endure. The difference? They are seen as having an injury crisis whereas we are seen as having a decent season injury-wise.

Laughable huh?

Anyone hear the word ‘crisis’ when we were without around eight first team players for practically every match last season? Nah, didn’t think so.

That’s about your lot today, I’m covering deadline day on Twitter, which you can follow @LadyArse.

Match preview in tomorrow’s blog.

Andy Carroll 35 Million Pounds. Torres should be worth a 100.

Denilson is also out with a hamstring problem, presumably the one he pulled up with yesterday but was able to carry on with. I’ve watched football for over 30 years and I cannot recall a single player who pulled a hamstring and then was running properly a few minutes later.

    ^^^

It happens. If it’s not a complete tear, you’ll feel the tightness and pain but you should be able to continue at a slightly less intense pace. Do a little too much and you get a complete tear. He probably just felt it go a bit and I imagine that pros try to avoid playing through or aggravating a potential hamstring injury since they’re so difficult to get rid of for good…

    • Anonymous

I guess those ones just haven’t stuck in my head, I wasn’t for aminute saying he was faking, just that it’s very unusual to see a player pull up like that then appear to shake it off.

      • Anonymous

Nothing of the sort. I was just defending the poor guy in anticipation of the shit stirrers. I thought it was obvious that he was a little limited in his movement afterward. If we had a sub left, no way he would have gone back on…

  • Juicy

I’d think Denilson will recover in a few days. I’ve seen it before from him, the signs are pretty obvious really. Although at the time it may have felt like a hamstring pull but what he is experiencing is nothing more than a common case of menstral cramp. I’m sure the medical staff knows what to do to him.

  • Floyd

What’s laughable is that no one in Arsenal “fandom” gives a sit about Denilson. All of you thought he faked it, or was such a wimp that he pulled up deliberately like that rather than cross the ball. And not a word about him coming back in; I don’t know about you but even Andy Grey would have noticed his movement was limited. And praise for this? Or recognition of his effort to get to the line? Don’t give me a laugh.

Mobbdean has a point, and in normal circumstances, maybe Arsenal should have kept him off. Of course, since he is by definition lazy, unfairness, uncommitted, and not fit to wear the shirt, maybe a brain scan is needed to explain why he acted like none of those things

    • Anonymous

I never once said he was faking, I said it was strange, which it was, when you see a player pull up with a hamstring injury that is usually the last you see of them.

Well done indeed to him for playing on so that we weren’t down to nine men. I clearly don’t care about that, otherwise I would have detailed the interview he gave explaining things…oh wait.. I did

    • Anonymous

And who in their right mind would even consider that he pretended to be injured rather than cross the ball?

    • Anonymous

And who in their right mind would even consider that he pretended to be injured rather than cross the ball?

  • H Moss

Move to the USA. We get nearly every game over here

  • Walkthewalk

That list of loan players make up a team that could just about survive in the PL :)

  • sqeak when i walk

Mr Wenger is walking a fine rope, if we do not win anything league cup apart Mr Wenger should resign as manager of Arsenal football club.

    • Anonymous

Wise up, are you aware of what Wenger has been doing at the club over the past five years?

      • cat in the hat

Wenger has been told by the board that he has to finish in the top4 at least each year as they know that he is rebuilding a squad. If you look at Barca, they didnt win anything for 5 years when they were rebuilding and look at them now.

Do you really want Wenger to leave? Who else is good enough to take over and manage to get us Champions league football, keep our club in profit all while building and moving to a new stadium?

On a sub point, do you think that most of our good young players are going to stay if he leaves?

      • squeak when i walk

Please, does this mean he is right to be so stubborn the whole point of moving from Highbury was to be able to compete in the market? or have you forgotten the whole point and please dont forget the small matter of £1350 for a season ticket (just27 home games)

        • Anonymous

Yes, but not for the first five years, that was the time for rebuilding, and clearing debt.

Look at the insane money being spent today, Wenger is right not to be held to ransom when what is available for crazy money isn’t better than what we have. I agree we need a CB, but should we be paying these sorts of fees?

          • squeak when i walk

Do you know how much we pay for scouts all around the world??you would think he could find a decent CB for a resonable amount ?????? if you cant see that he is being stubborn maybe just like you.

        • Anonymous

The quicker we repay the debt, the more money we will have to spend in the long run and the less wastage there will be with interest payments. Would you prefer to have an extra £20m+ going out of the club for 10/15 years more than necessary? Or to clear the debt quickly so that all money can go in ot the club and playing staff?

        • Weedonald

You’re the stubborn one, desperately holding onto the myth that Wenger won’t,doesn’t, can’t, will never spend and that he’s ¨hoarding¨ money while sucking us out of our wealth by demanding higher ticket prices. HE at least is a skilled economist and Football manager. He knows that mantaining a balanced and financially viable club is the future. Even UEFA and FIFA said that Arsenal’s approach should be the model for the future.
Is 1350sterling too much for season tickets to watch some of the best, most coherent and exciting Football in the world….maybe, but most of us will never buy season tickets and the VAST majority of true Arsenal supporters will never even get to see a game live at the Emirates but we know that Wenger’s plan will lead us to glory!

    • Carlito11

You have got to be having a laugh! We have the best football in the prem and will win it all when the financial fair play regs kick in! All true gooners support Mr Wenger- we remember not winning anything for 16years!

    • Weedonald

Yah…….brillant, ¨your ultimatum¨, like your intellect is pitiful. Wenger is the 2nd longest serving manager in the EPL, is the 2nd most decorated manager in the world, is FIFA manager of the decade and produced (at least so far) the only unbeaten team in recent EPL history! You are so dull, your mother must have been a rock! If Wenger goes…who are you going to replace him with, Mr.Moron? There isn’t anyone available with even a smidgen of his nous, skill, balance and foresight!
Grow up, get out of your diapers and stick to Fantasy Football management…at least there no one knows how dumb you are!

      • squeak when i walk

Hear what weed every body is entitled to their opinion no need to get offensive just because you are behind a monitor dont think youre hard.

    WENGER IS A TIGHT CUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

The price we paid for Nasri + Theo + RVP + Fabregas + Chamakh + Vermaelen + Song + Wilshere + Gibbs + Djourou = Andy Carroll

Clearly Wenger has no idea what he is doing.

      Don’t be an idiot.

      • squeak when i walk

So we should see a reduction in our season tickets :)

    • Carlito11

You’d love it if your parents bought you a car for your birthday and then you got evicted for missing your loan repayments wouldn’t you?

  • MYARSE

YER WE ARE AWARE OF WHAT HE AS BEEN DOING FOR 5 YEARS! WINNING SWEET FA!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

yeah, I suppose building a stadium and implementing a youth policy that is bringing through quality players without the stupid price tag…that’s not worth a few years patience huh?

Glad morons like you aren’t allowed anywhere near the running of Arsenal

  • Anonymous

    Wenger is a genius..no doubt..
we have seen classy performances this year and the win against H’field was historic…the day when all of wenger’s finaest player showed just how awesome they where..denilson superb(but then again ha has been that good all year)Bendtner what a world class striker..Eboue just great..Squillaci another scoop by wenger..and Thank the Lord ..when fab got injured at least we have one of the top three goalies in the worl to rely on….no need to mention that of cours we havent 2 CB’s to rely on..Wermy is soon back..and after a somewhat short lay off…it shouldnt take him more than a week to get up to speed……
me im taking a holiday and head up to Kentish Country to grow some feckin tomatoes..
The Arsena does at least lie pretty good…there isnt any money….it all gone..we have bought some property..and a whole lot og young men who wenger can play with ;..and Lady Arse Miss..the list of loanees….perfect ..not one of them will ever make it….second grade players but with top notch paub checks…
what a bl**dy joke Wenger and The Arsenal board have become

cant you see we’re being ripped off…

lets not invest in the Team right…

and oops there are plans to increase the ticket prices…just dandy..we dont pay very much as it is..

    • Carlito11

He put out a team that could win it. And win it we did. End of. Still got the best squad in the Prem if you ask me

  • Cavalry

Denilson usually moves so slow that he is the only player that could still play on even with a torn hamstring!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

Wenger is class, because instead of spending 35m on a player like carol or what ever liverpool paid for torres, wenger bought RVP cheap, made him a quality player. Same with Cesc, Nasri, Sagna, how many more shall I name??? And.. Chamakh – got him on a free, haha.

  • http://twitter.com/rtgooner Rachel Willcox

I cant even be bothered to waste my time with the “fans” that hate him anymore, loyalty works 2 ways is all I can say!!

    • Anonymous

I don’t hate him but surely a quality CB is needed for the final push ? It wouldn’t break the bank. If we end up trophy less this season he’s only going to have himself to blame.

  • Jamears

It makes me laugh play football manager 2010 and half the fans think they could manage a club better than Wenger! Wake up morons he is one of the best managers in the world!

  • The BearMan

I would like to see Mr. Wenger being a bid more decisive NOW as it appears he is not going to do anything in the transfer window. If he is going to bring back the JeT, Lansbury and Bartley. He should do so sooner rather than later and get them to practice with the squad, so that they understand each others game.

Arsenal must not underestimate Birmingham and feel the Carling Cup is already won. We have to do battle for that trophy. They want is as much as we do…….

    • Walkthewalk

No disrespect, but Birmingham want that trophy a LOT more than us – because it’s as good as it’s going to get for them

  • diwi19

you people are so saaaad!!! the whole problem of these stupid conversations are the creation of championship manager, football manager and the like!! this is the only reason some dumbass idiots would talk with such confidence about football! you guys have no brains. If you want a team who wins for a couple of seasons and then drops dead for 10 you have so many teams to pick from, just look at the debts list and pick one of the top teams there!! so great to be a leeds united fan after right?? after all they made the champions league semis ;) … you ask your team to spend money as if it was monopoly money or poker chips! pfff this is real money people. instead of being proud of our great manager for everything he did! some spoiled kids keep ranting about not spending and buying and spending! see if the whole world is going wrong we need to do that or else the manager and the board would have lost it! arsenal is not a world class team! it became a world class team because of everything that wenger did ! you people don’t realise that because you just started watching arsenal in the henry-bergkamp-vieira era when we were winning big! but before that? did we have talent?? NO did we have such a great academy? hell NO! did we have these training facilities? NO and i can keep on going about the great things wenger did for this team! wenger is building an EMPIRE a DYNASTY team and all you can think about is now now now now now now !! spoiled people never know they’re spoiled…until they lose what they have! just go buy some player on football manager and shut it!

    • squeak when i walk

do you have a season ticket or go to any games mate?

      • diwi19

i wish!!! i don’t live in the uk!

        • squeak when i walk

lets see if you felt the same if you paid 3k a year following the Arsenal.

          • diwi19

i would pay more! why? because i love the way they play! the philosophy of the club! i am a fan! not of trophies! of the whole package! i’m buying arsenal merchandise from their store online, i pay double shipping cz i live in lebanon! and then i pay again when i receive the merchandise! not the 3k that u pay! but just get the idea! it’s not like anyone is forced to be a season ticket holder! you do know that every year only one teams get to win the league so what about the other 19 teams? would all their season tickets holder feel the same as you? …

    • http://twitter.com/rtgooner Rachel Willcox

What a superb comment, full support :)

    • Anonymous

Change the record for Christ’s sake. No ones saying he should be spending recklessly. Whatever money he paid for Squill was wasted. Why not go for someone with some Prem experience ? We have got money to spend you don’t have to shop in Lidl all the time when you can afford to shop in Waitrose !

Building an empire a dynasty not with players like Almunia, Eboue, Squill, Denilson and Vela ! Go and have a lie down !

  • LiveFromTheEms

AW must be killing himself laughing at the crazy money being spent today on players who have no proven world class ability – £35m for Carroll, pleeeease, Liverpool have totally lost the plot !
Put it in boxing terms – pound for pound (spent) we are by far the best club in the Premier League, long after the shit hits the fan, when all the foreign owners have left & many clubs have gone bankrupt, we’ll be here winning everything

  • Merse10

The ive comments are boring and brainless. It’s fine to have an opinion if you can actually put that opinion across without calling our legendary manager a c**t or talking absolute shit.
We are 2nd in the league, still in the FA Cup and Champions League and have a League Cup final this month.
It’s a myth that Arsene doesn’t spend money or he doesn’t sign anyone in January – pretty sre Asharvin, Reyes and Adebayor all joined in the winter window. Arsene spends our money as he sees fit. He certainly wouldn’t spend £35m on Andy Carroll. We have a strong squad and if we could improve on it we would. Top quality players are generally at top clubs and they do not want to sell unless for stupid fees (see Darren Bent & Carroll). It’s not as simple as we should by x, y, z”. You have to find a player, agree a fee, the player want to sign and then agree terms with that player.
If there isn’t anyone out there who is available and is of good enough quality then there’s no point buying for the sake of it.

I’m sick of our “support” – blogs and web pages full of moaning and the ground never lending enough support to our boys during game.

The job Arsene has done is nothing short of astounding. The sadium HAS to be paid for, same as if you have a mortgage on a house. For the time being we cannot spend £50m but we also do not need to because thanfully we have a manager who is sensible, looks after the interests and long term future of our great club and is able to buy quality without spending maddening sums of money like we’ve seen today.
We may not have won a trophy for 5 years but that’s nothing in a 125 year history, there will ALWAYS be times when we do not win anything, – that’s nothing new and anyway since when did record books start 5 years ago? We’ve had cups and leagues in the last 10 years…oh and an unbeaten season, oh and our first EVER European Cup Final.

Arsene only ever does what he thinks is right for our club and 95% of the time he gets it spot-on.

  • ed

what i find funny is people keep saying “arsene needs to buy” “arsene should buy” ” arsenal are short 1 gk, cb and dm”

now i agree we are short a cb due to injuries. and dm we just havent bought anyone. gk we are fine with fabianski and szczesny and even almunia.

but who do you suggest we buy?

now wenger has said if he were to buy he would like buy a player that has premier league experience. due to being in the CL we need the player to be CL eligibible and we would prefer the player to be CL worthy.

so name me a CB and or DM who is

    1. premier league experienced
    2. CL eligible and CL wothy
    3. a reasonable price of £15M

and i think wenger would do it. but that player does not exist.

    • Anonymous

Chris Samba £8m, Gary Cahill 15m, Roger Johnson £10m all better than Squill !

      • Merse10

Roger Johnson?! Are you kidding me. If Arsene spent £10m on Roger Johnson the world would be a madder one that it’s become today.
Where have you got those figures from, i assume you have just got off the phone to Owen Coyle and he’s told you Cahill is available for £15m?

        • Anonymous

You think Roger Johnson or Chris Samba isn’t better than Squill ? Through in Vela and you’ll get Cahill for 15m !

You need to read up on Johnson, constantly getting rave reviews from the press despite Blues lowly position.

          • Merse10

I don’t need to read up on anything. I’ve seen him with my own eyes. Wht not sign Titus Bramble? Prem experience, rave reviews from the press for his performances. Come on!

Why is Squill being written off already.

          • Anonymous

Because he’s bargain basement shite ! Talksport announced half an hour ago we tried for Upson and didn’t get him, thank god for that but maybe you think he’s the answer !

Can’t agree with you about RJ had a great season last year and the Blues kept plenty of clean sheets but you’re entitled to your opinion.

          • Merse10

Sorry i should have read those “Vela: Come and get me Bolton” pleas in the press.

  • http://twitter.com/MajorDamo Damian Ondore

One word, to put this argument into perspective: Szczesny.

During the summer, there were calls for Wenger’s head, and questions about his judgement regarding the keeper situation. Few of us knew any more about Szczesny than a few youttube clips, the horrible injury he had, and occasional comments from youth team staff.

Yet, we were close, very close to buying someone who would have slowed his chances of making it into the first team.

How many of you Wenger-baiters would have sanction the signing of the near 40-year old who was mooted as our new stop-gap? very few I imagine.

The team that has just spent £35m on a barely proven prospect in Carroll is the same team that has lagged behind us in the league Arsenal for most of our famously trophyless seasons. Get a grip and think of the longer term.

    • Anonymous

Let’s hope the longer term doesn’t include Almunia, Eboue, Squill, Denilson and Vela !

      • http://twitter.com/MajorDamo Damian Ondore

I agree with Ladyarse on keeping Almunia until the summer.

Eboue should stay for purely comedy / mascot reasons. We’d have a pretty boring squad were it not for him and Szczesny. Squillaci is a plant. Wenger has been known to by a shit player with a good work ethic, purely to set an example to palyers who have a problem with hard work ( think Cygan ). Denilson, I really don’t know. I’m scared we’d lose him and he’d go off somewhere else and become The Invisible Wall Mk2. He is skillful and too you to think that he couldn’t get his head right and start concentrating. I’m more worried about Clichy than him, long term. Vela. We could probably get £15 m for him at todays ( and I mean today, 31/1/11) prices. Get rid. Hard to imagine he was rated i the same bracket as hernandez.

  • http://twitter.com/ArseOnline Mark Wellington

How about this: if the tickets are so expensive and you think the club isn’t worth the price of admission, then give it up. I’m sure there’s a waiting list for that seat…

I mean, you’d do the same at a restaurant, right?

  • Weedonald

Loved the deserted Tombstone with tumbleweed photo LA!! That’s actually a photo of Stratford Spuds’ stands once there fanbase deserts them!
Those stats for our on loan players are impressive indeed. Imagine if only half of them come good and can challenge for a place in the first team!! 10 skilled and motivated kids trying to kick 10 top class footballers out of the first team each week!
I love the Wenger haters who call themselves Gunner supporters….I think they confuse Arsenal with a firing range where AW and some players are the moving targets…the problem is they’re shooting blanks, which aptly desribces their state of mind and intelligence..they are too stupid to realize what a genius they have directing their club. In the real world, where they haven’t resided for awhile, Arsene has to balance the budget, the team success, the youth strategy he has embraced and keep these fickle fanboys happy every second of their miserable lives. They are better known as the Spend-Spend- Spend-Transfer-Transfer-Transfer Real Madrid,Manchester City anything goes Boyz! Losers all!!!
