For the day before a semi-final, it’s all very quiet in the land of Arsenal. The fact that the main piece on Arsenal.com was on tactics with Stewart Robson tells its own story. I wonder if Arsenal are aware of how completely anti-Arsenal he is whenever he’s commentating on our games away from ATVO. I mean, this guy doesn’t just go a bit out of his way to prove he’s not an Arsenal man, he acts worse than some Spuds commentators. He’s a disgrace and Arsenal should sack him.
To harsh? Don’t think that for a minute. Read here if you don’t agree.
In actual, current Arsenal news, well, there isn’t any.
Kos has been talking to Arsenal.com about how we are improving defensively, and he might have a point. In our last three games we’ve only conceded one goal and that was a penalty. Do three games mean we’ve turned a defensive corner? I don’t know and it probably is too early to make any sort of definitive conclusion. Come back in May and see how we’ve done.
Theo has been talking about how wearing the number 14 shirt has increased the pressure on him to succeed. Given that I’m nearly certain he picked that number (he originally wanted a different number, though I can’t remember which). Saying that he didn’t know it had been Henry’s shirt strikes me as a little funny, but it’s Theo, I think his legs would fall off is he were to tell a lie, so we have to trust him on this.
Theo being Theo and Henry being Henry, our current number 14 was simply gushing when talking about our old 14:
“He was always there for me if I wanted to talk to him. I was quite scared at first but as I got older and played with him a bit more he was fantastic. [When he was here before] it was great being around him and learning from the best.”
Who’s going to be the first to take any fun out of that statement by reminding everyone that Becks trained with us too? The difference, may I remind you, is that we weren’t looking to sign him.
Always the first to bring you breaking Arsenal news, the official site reported yesterday that Arsene had been voted Manager of the Decade, a story I brought to you a few days ago. With the introduction of Twitter, news spreads quickly these days, and while Arsenal.com have never been the quickest, they are being made to look like the Silvestre of websites at the minute.
In case you haven’t noticed, there is a brand new page on LadyArse.com, reporting confirmed transfers and loans. It won’t be covering rumours and suggestions, and will be updated regularly so I’d suggest bookmarking and checking regularly.
Speaking of transfers, a player often linked with us, Per Mertesacker has once again stated that he’s happy to stay at Werder Bremen. Speaking to Kreiszeitung, the German international who has 18 months left to run on his contract said:
“We are in a difficult moment with Werder and we should not be talking about me at this time. I am needed here for our day-to-day work and it is my duty to concentrate on that. I cannot deal with anything else.
“Like I say, most of it does not even get through to me and I have told my agent that he should leave me in peace. In certain situations, players should protect themselves by not losing track of the most important things in their job.”
An admirable statement, far better a player who has loyalty than one who is constantly looking to jump ship. After all, what happens with those players is you sign them and then they are immediately on the lookout for the next big move.
Who will we get in defence? I’ve no clue. Will we get anyone or will we see how Miguel does on Wednesday night? Your guess is as good as mine at the minute.
Another player we’ve been linked with repeatedly, I swear every window is like groundhog day, is Emir Spahic, who wants to join us in this window. Again.
The question is, does Wenger want him to join us also? I guess we’ll find out in the next two weeks, but with him being 30 and Arsene already having purchased one elder statesman this season, could his heart allow him to sign another for Arsenal? With Miguel and Bartley coming through, do we even want a long-term option? And what happens if we buy another centre-half and Vermaelen and Squillaci recover? Come next season we will have far too many. Will we sell? Will we release some of the youngsters? Such is the dilemma of purchasing just one more player.
I’m glad I’m not Arsene.
That is literally all there is at the minute, I’ve scoured the net but can find you nothing else worth talking about. Luckily we have a match to look forward to tomorrow.
I’ll cover that then.
