Why Liverpool should serve as a warning to those wanting trophies at any cost

When Wenger said that being in the top four and gaining Champions League qualification was like winning a trophy, many scoffed at him. It wasn’t shiny. You couldn’t put it in a cabinet. What the hell was he talking about?

It may not be a trophy, but to consistently qualify for the Champions league while spending little, and rebuilding the entire club including stadium is an exceptional achievement.

Liverpool have dropped out of the Champions League for one season. Their ridiculous spending levels have won them nothing and now they are in deep, deep shit. This year, it will take a miracle for them to qualify for Europe at all, let alone the Champions League. Their big stars will leave, no new ones will want to arrive, their revenue will drop, they won’t be able to afford the top players wages so will have to sign more mediocre players which will make their bid to get back in to the top four even more difficult.

It is a vicious circle.

For a few years now, Arsenal have been tipped as the club that would drop out and start the decent to mid-table obscurity. Wenger won’t get the plaudits for keeping this team competitive when it was filled with inexperienced kids and riddled with injuries to its senior players. Other clubs have shown they cannot cope with a fraction of the injury problems, or spending restrictions.

Not Arsene. Not Arsenal.

Chase the trophies at any cost and miss and Liverpool is what you get. Do it right as Wenger had, and you not only have a chance of winning trophies, but you’ll make sure the club only comes out stronger in the end.

What other club can say that? And it is that consistency that sees Wenger woted as the World’s Best Manager for the last decade.

Chelsea are starting to look like they might follow suit.

Well said. Some of our “win anything at all costs” supporters just can’t see that. They fail to understand what an incredible balancing act the great man has done for a very LONG time. At least we know that every season since Wenger has been there we have been challenging for TOP honours.

And yes, look at Chelsea-they will need another few 100million squid to rejuvinate that squad to reach it’s previous all conquering levels! Where they gonna get that from???

Look at Leeds! CL semi-final in 2000-league ONE in 2009!!

Arsenal are financially healthy, robust and have a built in/internal transfer system in place-our academy!

Wenger has raised the bar so high that many have forgotten what it takes to remain at the top here YEAR IN YEAR OUT!!

A nice, well written blog but not very balanced ! Buying one or two quality signings defensively could have made all the difference for us and I’m not having it that we couldn’t afford them, no way would that have put us in debt. He has done a great job but makes it difficult for himself by not buying quality and not buying the right players.

I think if it weren’t for Sir Alex Ferguson, Man Utd would be in exactly the same boat. Some how he can get performances out of average players and even when they are playing badly (often) they grind out results. If they ever replaced him they would be somewhere in the mid table with Liverpool

A typically lazy predictable post from the remote non paying ‘AKB’ type Arsenal follower. There are no genuine paying Arsenal fans who have demanded success at any cost. Clearly as has been the case for a very long time now the team are lacking a top quality goalkeeper & centre back. Buying them would not financially jeopardise the club & having failed to do so has already unnecessarily cost us major silverware & is likely to continue to do so when it is there for the taking with most of our major rivals suffering troubles or are weaker whilst not having the finances Arsenal DO have to remedy them. Liverpool’s situation has no bearing on the ambitions or reasonable demands of the genuine paying Arsenal fans.

Non paying? You having a laugh? When I go to matches it costs me approx £200 for flights, trains, hotel and match ticket – to see a game against the likes of Wigan (I once paid £200 alone for a ticket and hotel to see them play the Spuds).I did this at least once (usually twice) a month until I lost my job – that’s an outlay of over £2000 per year.

Apart from that I pay for Sky, ESPN, Arsenal TV online, merchandise from the club, fan share membership, red membership and a whole host of other things.

By your logic only the 40,000 or so who are at matches every week are allowed an opinion on THEIR club?

      Catch yourself on.

I agree partially with you. But what burns me is that wenger sold the likes of pires, viera and I would say even gilberto without giving us the steel. I am not a big fan of player retention but such an attitude excuses the failings of young players.

I mean if denilson, walcott or any other youngster does not perform. We have to swallow that with the excuse that they are young etc…Excuses don’t win you matches nor loyalty. Sometimes he just has to spend and I mean when we direly need one. We have been waiting far too long for a second CDM, a quality CB.

And some one to guide the players not boss like gallas did. Sol had that effect in that short stint.
