Tell me something I don’t know

There’s only really one thing that anyone involved with Arsenal are talking about and that’s Barcelona.

If you’re still talking about Rooney’s goal, perhaps you should reassess your loyalties.

I’m not really sure what to say, we know that we are the underdogs, we know that they are the best team on the planet, we know what happened the last time we played them, and we know how they feel about Cesc Fabregas.

Let’s look at what we ‘know’ then shall we?

Is it right that we are the underdogs? Of course, even the most hardened gooner must conceded that any other team on the planet is an underdog when facing Barcelona.

That also takes care of point two, but we must remember that they are not unbeatable. They are human, they can have an off day, and so many other factors can play their part.

The last time we played them we were mullered. Or should that be Messied? Even though the first leg finished 2-2, we should have been dead and buried by half-time, having an inspired performance from Almunia to thank for still being in the tie. Of course, true to form, in the second half, he made it as easy as possible for Barca to take the lead. Theo’s introduction terrified Barca and we snatched an unlikely draw.

The second leg was a nightmare. Starting off so well, we took the lead and then Messi showed up. But, what the score-line, or performance, doesn’t tell you, is about the team we sent over there. Unlike Spurs, who are without (possibly) three players and it’s a ‘crisis’ as they head to Milan, we were without Fabregas, Song, Gallas, Van Persie, and Arshavin. We went to Barcelona and played Silvestre. Silvestre! Our bench consisted of Fabianski, Eboue, Eastmond, Campbell, Traore, Merida, and Eduardo.

Even on their best days, to start a team at the home of the Barcelona Globetrotters which includes Almunia, Silvestre, Denilson, and Bendtner, and to only leave with a three goal deficit is some sort of miracle. This was my preview from last season.

Could Man United do any better out there without Vidic, Fletcher, Scholes, Rooney (on last season’s form) and Nani? What about Chelsea without Terry, Essien, Lampard, Drogba, and Anelka? What if they had practically zero fit first-team players for the bench? You can be dam sure you would hear about it more than you did in the lead up to our match their last season.

We have more than a few points to make tomorrow night.

We need to be in their faces the way we were with Chelsea. Right from the first whistle until the last. We need 10 players who are willing to work at 100% for 90 minutes or more. The goalkeeper will be busy, and I’m glad it’s Chesney. Inexperienced or not, this kid is a match-winning keeper, I have no doubt about that (and have been saying the same since 2009). We need to stretch our fitness to breaking point, we should know that if you get about Barca,  they can be broken. Watch a replay of the last 20 minutes of the first leg last year and see how sloppy Barcelona become with the ball when we start pressing from the front. There can be no excuse, no eye on the horizon and the league. No holding back.

It’s all or nothing.

And I think that’s exactly what we will see tomorrow night. I believe that we will come out as we did against Chelsea. We will shock Barcelona, and perhaps even shock some of our own fans as well.

Finally, we come to Cesc Fabregas. Arsenal captain, fans favourite and ex-Barca player. They feel they have some sort of divine right to him, well, here’s a few facts – Cesc was a Barcelona player for six years, he has been an Arsenal one for eight. We didn’t ‘fish’ him away any more than they tried to get Afobe. The difference? Cesc wanted to leave Barcelona, Afobe didn’t want to leave Arsenal. And what about Henry, Hleb, Petit, Overmars, Sylvinho, and Van Bronckhurst?

Barcelona are one of the most hypocritical teams on the planet.

Pah, enough about them.

In encouraging news Nasri took part in an open training session this morning with the rest of the team, van Persie’s knee didn’t fall off after being kicked at the weekend, and we are generally looking as strong as we could possibly expect.

This gives us every chance. Chesney or Almunia? Djourou and Kos or anyone with Silvestre? Denilson and Diaby or Song and Jack? Van Persie or Bendtner? This year’s Theo and Sami or last?

The only weak link is the inclusion of Eboue due to Sagna’s suspension, but let’s not talk about that eh? It might make me cry.

The rest is looking pretty damn hot.

The media’s focus will no doubt be on Messi, but as Diaby said:

“We need to be focused on the way we defend and not be focused on one man (Messi). We know that individually he is really good but if we do the job together I think it will be difficult for him. For me, that is the best way to control him and control the game.

“When you focus on one man it is never a good idea because they have also got Iniesta, Xavi, Villa – so many players. The most important thing is to be well organised defensively and, when we have got the ball, play our game.

“I watch Barcelona play quite often because I like the way they play, the way they move and obviously they have got the best player in the world.

“We know that this is a great team but we have a very good side with very good players. We can beat anybody in the world. We just need to be conscious of our qualities and play our game.”

We have the talent, and if we don’t have the desire for a tie like this then we never will. Fortunately, when the big teams roll in to town, we tend to pay attention.

Just as I finished that paragraph I was alerted to the fact that Diaby was withdrawn from the training session earlier today due to injury.

Hokey kokey…here we go again.

Just to wrap things up, many Arsenal blogs are uniting to ask all fans going to the game tomorrow night to fill the Emirates with renditions of ‘Hand off Cesc Fabregas’ (to the usual tune of ‘We’ve got Cesc Fabregas’. Started at the request of Le Grove, this is a very real way in which we can impact the game. They’ve even been so kind as to design a Twitter avatar which you can get here.

We know that when Cesc plays at the Nou Camp they will no doubt make some effort to let him know how they feel about him, let’s make sure that we leave him in no doubt what he means to us.

Closer look at the starting line-up in tomorrow’s blog.

Leg two last year was basically the quickest I’ve gone from hope to despair. Damn that modest, likeable b**tard that is Lionel Messi!

  • puppyguts

i dnt buy into this whole lovefest tht surrounds barca, i think its a bit of an outrage that a team from such a powder puff league are hailed as the definitive “best team in the world” im not sayin i dnt recognize there obvious quality, but in la liga the ride is far to easy when compared to the extremes of epl where every week u hav to be prepared for war, imagine the form arsenal would be in after five months of spainsh opposition. i dnt beleive messi would b any where near as spectacular playin against teams tht dnt allow such ridiculas amounts of time and space like they do in spain, the world cup was a great example of how ordinary messi can apear when he is not in the comfortable sanctuary of the spanish league.

im hoping for a big shock 2morow, if we are clinical with our chances anything can happen

I just want to add something that people always tend to leave out of the Cesc transfer argument. Cesc was a youth player when Arsenal signed him. A youth player that Barcelona, due to Spanish labor laws, was not legally allowed to give a contract. Though many Arsenal fans would not admit it, this is how most of their youth products are acquired. Arsenal has an amazing network of scouts and analysts, but our B team is essentially made up of the products of other clubs’ juvenile teams. When was the last time that a player came all the way through the Arsenal youth ranks? Signing Cesc was a product of excellent scouting and an great piece of business, seeing how Barcelona had no legal means of keeping hold of him. Whether Cesc’s acquisition or any of the other players brought in from other clubs’ academies is considered ‘poaching’ or not is up to interpretation. Because of the circumstances of the Cesc transfer it is pretty ridiculous to compare it to that of Henry, Hleb, Petit, Overmars, Sylvinho, and Van Bronckhurst. Negotiating terms with popular professional players is quite different than scouting and signing what is in sense a child. In regards to Afobe, I read a lot about the supposed scouts that would be sent to look steal away this young player, but for a club that is notorious for talking too much, they were rather silent on the issue.

Now that I have said that, I want to put in two (or more) cents on Nasri. Last year Arsene risked Cesc in the first leg. He made the play that kept Arsenal in that tie, but his injury in my mind put to bed any hopes of a league title run. Is Nasri as important this season as Cesc was last season? We need to ask what is more important, the league or what I think is a slim chance of European silverware?

There is that, but it has also been claimed that Barcelona would not give Cesc any assurances over his future.

As for players who have come right through Arsenals ranks:
      Ashley Cole
      Kieran Gibbs
      Jack Wilshere
      Henri Lansbury
      Jay Emmanuel Thomas
      Benik Afobe
      Chucks Aneke
      Emmanuel Frimpong
      Craig Eastmond

Do I need to go on? Our youth set-up is only now starting to produce young, English players who have come all the way through Arsenal. The players you talk about were brought in to supplement while the Academy took the time that was needed to start producing players. Also, aquiring young talent from abroad is key to any club’s future. Don’t forget, English clubs are restricted by the 90 minute rule.

      Are Barcelona?

      • Justsaying

If you are accusing Barcelona or any Spanish club of being short Spanish players, then you must be misinformed.

In regards to the list of Arsenal ‘youth’ products:
Cole signed on when he was 18 and an adult. That is hardly a product of Arsenal’s system.
Gibbs is the product of Wimbledon.
Wilshere is the only one on this list that I will give Arsenal credit for.
The rest have great potential but as of now have done nothing for Arsenal and little for their loaner clubs.

        • Anonymous

Ashley Cole made his debut for Arsenal when he was 18, he had been at Arsenal for years by that point. Kieran Gibbs was at Wimbledon for 3 years and has been at Arsenal for 7 so by your logic, Wimbledon should get the credit for having him aged 11-14 and Arsenal nothing for developing him from 14?.

          • Justsaying

I’m saying exactly what I did in my first post, that Arsenal reaps the benefit of other clubs’ youth systems. Arsenal is a big club, that is what big clubs do. Cole, I believe joined Arsenal’s youth ranks in 1997, I am pretty sure that doesn’t count as ‘years.’

          • Anonymous

…..then I have been misinformed….why does every one always say he is a product of our youth system who came up through the ranks?

Still, youth systems take time to produce, Arsenal’s is only just starting

    • puppyguts

cesc made a choice NOT to continue with barcalona, whats so hard to understand about tht, he also made a choice when he was an adult to extend his contract.

considering arsenal is playing the best football in the most difficult league on the planet, i wouldn’t describe our chances as slim in any competition

      • Justsaying

Yeah no kidding he made a choice. I think it was the right one. But you can’t compare Cesc’s transfer to Hleb’s. Who we should be thanking Barca for taking him off our hands, because it is pretty obvious that he significantly lacks quality.

What are the qualities of the EPL that would make you say that it is the most difficult?

Win or lose (or draw) let’s hope we go out swinging and give it a go. I do not want them to come out and play like they did against Man U at O.T. how disappointing would that be after all the hype !

Eboue at right back is a frightening thought at the best of times but against this mob, well it doesn’t bare thinking about ! My only hope is that he’s so desperate to impress that he plays a blinder !

Jack will have to watch his tackling as the Refs in Europe are a bit card happy but saying that some of the Refs over here have been shocking so fingers crossed we get a good Ref who gets the big decisions right !

Lastly we will get chances and we need to take them if we are to have a chance over two legs.

Nice reminder LA. After looking at last year’s squad sheets for the two matches i can’t see anything but a solid win tomorrow. We’ll fare rather well against the entitled DNA snatching pr**ks from Spain. Would be nice to humiliate them tomorrow. Its also nice to be the underdog this time round, you know with all that pressure on them and all.
On matches like this i always bet on an unlikely player to pull some surprise. Who is more unlikely than our little Russian to get back his shooting boots. I see a comfortable game for us tomorrow. 4 nil to the Arsenal!
