Stoke stick it to sorry Arsenal

Sigh.

That isn’t really how that was supposed to go was it? We were supposed to turn up, tear them apart, and walk away having spent 90 minutes listening to their despicable support (portions of it at least) booing a player for having his leg broken by one of their payers.

That was our first mistake – assuming we’d turn up. I’ve no idea why I allowed the fact that we’d beaten United last week to influence my expectations of what we would get against Stoke. Stupid I know, and a rookie error. But that’s the thing with this Arsenal side, at regular intervals we have turned out a stellar performance prompting all us mugs fans to think the corner has FINALLY been turned, That lessons have FINALLY been learned. If nothing else we think to ourselves that it must happen sooner rather than later.

Not so it seems.

How many ‘one of those days’ can one team have in a single season? Well, it seems that this year Arsenal are trying their best to find out.

It means nothing to beat United and Chelsea and Barcelona but then lose to WBA, Bolton, Newcastle, Stoke and the rest. Absolutely nothing. Anyone can get themselves up for a game against the best in the world, but what makes the best in the world stand out from the rest is the ability to treat every team they face as one and the same. They know that they need to perform every match, no matter if it is at the Bernabeu or the Britannia.

This Arsenal team don’t know that, or, if they do, they don’t care. All season they have turned up for matches against the so-called lesser teams and refused to fight for the points.

I could defend Arsenal today, but why should I bother? I’ve defended them all season and that dross which was served up today has frequently been my reward. Defensive lapses (how great was Djourou for Stoke?) lack of urgency, zero passion, nobody in the box, an inability to find a decent cross, or get a free-kick past a wall.

Same old Arsenal, always self-defeating.

I’m tired. I’m angry. I’ve seen this far too much over this season. It was evident even as we beat West Ham at the start of the season, and while it has threatened to leave, it’s always returned just like that crazy ex who simply will not fuck off.

I started this blog and then just stopped, pretty sure that my mind was on strike. After all, how many times can you ask one brain to come up with yet another blog about how Arsenal had most of the possession, made a few defensive errors and lost the game? It’s old, and it’s certainly not interesting any more.

So what is there left to say?

Not much that wouldn’t be repeating myself and I’m sure you’ve got plenty better to be doing with your time than listening me repeat the same story. It’s boring Arsenal, and it’s a little bit tiresome as well now.

Two games left, third place still not secure and with Villa at home and Fulham away still to play we can’t say that we are guaranteed any points given that we are currently playing as if we are relegation fodder.

No excuses Arsenal. Simply not good enough.

Well said! Would be interesting to go back on your blog from about a month ago defending arsenal from media myths! See has your opinion changed on any or all the headings?

    • Alan

Well done George. This idiot blogger has been searching for excuses and insulting everyone who didn’t agree with her Arsene Wenger rhetoric yet now reality has set in and yet she labels Stoke fans as despicable. Have a word with yourself.

I thought the stoke fans were actually excellent today. They chant and support their side against teams who try and bring them down. Their rugby references were very funny and we’ve had that coming. If any club randomly attacked our style of play, we chant about it. Like the boring boring Arsenal stuff. Good luck to them.

I have never once insulted anyone for disagreeing with me. I’m sick having a discussion about the difference between having a differing opinion and being abusive.

        Troll on…

        • George

Just to say I wasn’t trying to be abusive there! I honestly think it would make an interesting blog! I’m sure this last month has changed arsene’s mind on some players and areas of the squad!

          • Bertie

Let’s hope so George or I think a lot more people will be changing their minds about him ! Me included.

        • Billy

To be fair when others have called posters that criticise the manager “twats” and other things you have usually responded with a “cheers” or “lol” so you don’t help yourself there ladyarse.

      • Bertie

If you think LA is an idiot blogger why do you read her opinions? To me that indicates the only idiot round here ! As for the Stoke fans booeing Aaron Ramsey just because he made Shawcross cry well I agree that is despicable.

        • Billy

Part and parcel of football mate, it happens.

  • AFC

Be patient and calm till the transfer window opens.Actually it is good that we lost because of some defensive howlers. Now wenger is under a massive pressure to buy this summer.Anyway we cannot win the title even if we have won today. So there is nothing to worry about.Yes it hurts but we arsenal fans have seen loads worse than this.Still if nothing is made this summer then it is time to PROTEST AGAINST THE CLUB AND MR.ARSENE WENGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

It is only a matter of time before ALL the AKBs change their tune. They are quickly learning that it is because we love our club that we moan and not the other way around! We are going nowhere under AW (except backwards) and one only has to look at stats to PROVE this point,we can accept not winning trophies due to better sides but to keep hearing delusional statements of “mental strength”,”togetherness” and all the other bull is quite simply unacceptable. We may only be supporters but we know what we see!Our eyes don’t lie!

Sometimes it worth taking a step back, a deep breath and looking at the big picture from the outside rather than the stupid knee jerk opinions on most sites. So LA was right to be cautious a month ago. The situation is not perfect, but we have had a terrible season with injuries. We do seem to have too many squad players not first team players, playing. So can see at least five being replaced.
Frustrating, yes but thats what supporting a team is…

How many ‘one of those days’ can one team have in a single season? Well, it seems that this year Arsenal are trying their best to find out.” – This sentence sums it all up

  • Jay

I think the problem to a large degree is the formation. We are playing players out of position for the sake of a system that only works against half the teams in the league, if that. While we have the players to change things around, Wenger is too stubborn to change formation to suit the opposition. He says we play a 4-3-3, but everyone knows we actually play a 4-5-1.

Here is how I would mix things up.

    Change formation: play a 4-3-1-2

Team: Rather than trying to squeeze all our best players onto the pitch by playing them out of position, use them for rotation, how it is meant to be.

First team (subs): This is how I would line up (more or less)

    ………………Szczesny

    ……………..(Fabianski)

    Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen Clichy

    (Eboue)(Squillaci)(Djourou)(Gibbs)

    ……V ………Wilshere……….V

    ……V………..(Song)…………V

    ……V……Cesc…Ramsey….V

    ……V…..(Nasri)…(Diaby)…..V

    ……V…………RvP……………V

    …………….(Arshavin)

    ………..Bendtner Walcott

    ……….(Chamakh) (Vela)

This allows all players to play in their strongest position. Allow our fullbacks to provide the width and stick in crosses. Exploit wings against teams that park the bus for Bendtner or Chamakh to attack.

Then start practicing defending in training, including set pieces. Adopt man4man rather than zonal marking on set pieces. Take RvP off freekick duty.

Shorten the pitch to give our defense more protection and speed up our counter attacks. As we are better than most playing in tight spaces, a short pitch will suit us more than others.

Arsenal FC, please let me know if you wish me to send in my CV. Tactically, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t do a worse job than Wenger.

gutted today asked hubby (yid) what you think of Arsenal this season,he said you lack belief i said is that all he said yeh your a good team but you need to win something and you can move on i agree love Arsenal hate losing RED ARMY

    • http://twitter.com/jopparoad Joppa Road

Red Army are Manchester United fans. Sigh, sigh and more sighs.

      • Billy

Typical but not surprising mate, we have so many like that following us nowadays it’s untrue. All thanks to our beloved board

  • Geoff Ward

Geoff Have these players got any sense, why did Asharvin push their player to give a stupid free kick from which they scored when there was no danger at all.

  • http://twitter.com/jopparoad Joppa Road

I think you should change your closing to “Not good enough Wenger. Simply not good enough”.

This club is fast turning into a sham of what it once meant and stood for.

  • http://twitter.com/jopparoad Joppa Road

and….I’ve hated the way Stoke City are labelled Stoke RFC by Arsenal. It’s absolutely pathetic and I’ve said as much on here, LG & Heart In Highbury. They have every right to play the game the way they do and it’s up to Arsenal to find a way to beat them. Stoke City are where they are on merit and good luck to them in the cup final.

It Arsenal had just a small amount of Stoke’s fight and orgranisation at the back and dare I say heart we would have won this league a long time ago.

But we dont. Yet many are quick to highlight Stoke as a rugby team. Get real.

Took you long enough to come round to my way of thinking !

As you know me and a few others have been getting stick since the start of the season for saying things weren’t right over at the Emirates. I stated early on that the tide was turning against the team and AW and low and behold what happens a few months later our fans end up fighting each other ! We’ve had some great performances this season followed by numerous below par performances which have cost us the title. For me the danger signs started on 18th September when we turned up with our worst performance of the season (at the time) against Sunderland, scored the flukiest goal of the season, missed a pen and let them score in the last minute of injury time ! We’d just done Braga 6-0 on the previous Wednesday and thought that just turning up would be enough !

IMO we have gone backwards this season (last time I mentioned that I was coated off) surely after 6 years we should be heading on an upward curve (not necessarily winning things but getting there) but we’re not !

AW reckons a couple of signings will do the trick (that’s if we can keep our best players) for me it needs more than that, the players coming in need to be quality and some need to be experienced ! If we get one or two more signings from the bargain basement it will be the same again next year ! You heard it here first !

One thing LA I know that you’re angry but I didn’t read any criticism of AW in your blog and believe me he is as much to blame as the players. If he can’t motivate them anymore it’s time for us to say thank you for everything you’ve done for us but you’ve taken the club as far as you can.

    • Anonymous

Didn’t go into criticism of anyone really, just the overall…don’t worry, Wenger is not immune, will post more on it throughout the week.

  • Girl Gunner

A ray of sunshine after the man u game, and then back to the storm…..well, i really am not angry today, though i am a bit dissapointed,i’m too young to die of heart break,so i’m just getting on with life…. still love arsenal but as i have said before, we need change, AW can stay, but the formation and the lack of inspiration and motivation and passion ,at gameslike today’s sucking us flat……sigh

    Nice blog, btw

It gets better than that mate, you forgot !

1-1 with the mighty Leeds United at home in the FA Cup !
1-0 loss to Ipswich away in the CC semi final !
1-1 draw with those world beaters Leyton Orient away in the FA Cup !

and people honestly thought we were going to win something this season !

  • Girl Gunner

dissapointed only a little bit,not sooo much, just a bit….maybe cause i know we can win, we just get a bit, out of sync maybe, idk

  • Avenell Andy

Wenger should be given at least two more seasons to get things right. We are nearly there, we just need to make a couple of canny signings and integrate them into the team.

  • Rob_Anon

You lot think you have it bad, I work in Stoke.

I had to go in this morning and face again the 30 or so season ticket holders I sat amongst on Sunday.

Add that to all the fake Manc’s rubbing it in (this I could handle if they at least sounded like scallys), it was monumentally pants.

  • Shubhamgoel27

    Great article.
Poor performance on sunday.deserved nothing.Arsene Really has only himself to blame
