Sigh.
That isn’t really how that was supposed to go was it? We were supposed to turn up, tear them apart, and walk away having spent 90 minutes listening to their despicable support (portions of it at least) booing a player for having his leg broken by one of their payers.
That was our first mistake – assuming we’d turn up. I’ve no idea why I allowed the fact that we’d beaten United last week to influence my expectations of what we would get against Stoke. Stupid I know, and a rookie error. But that’s the thing with this Arsenal side, at regular intervals we have turned out a stellar performance prompting all us mugs fans to think the corner has FINALLY been turned, That lessons have FINALLY been learned. If nothing else we think to ourselves that it must happen sooner rather than later.
Not so it seems.
How many ‘one of those days’ can one team have in a single season? Well, it seems that this year Arsenal are trying their best to find out.
It means nothing to beat United and Chelsea and Barcelona but then lose to WBA, Bolton, Newcastle, Stoke and the rest. Absolutely nothing. Anyone can get themselves up for a game against the best in the world, but what makes the best in the world stand out from the rest is the ability to treat every team they face as one and the same. They know that they need to perform every match, no matter if it is at the Bernabeu or the Britannia.
This Arsenal team don’t know that, or, if they do, they don’t care. All season they have turned up for matches against the so-called lesser teams and refused to fight for the points.
I could defend Arsenal today, but why should I bother? I’ve defended them all season and that dross which was served up today has frequently been my reward. Defensive lapses (how great was Djourou for Stoke?) lack of urgency, zero passion, nobody in the box, an inability to find a decent cross, or get a free-kick past a wall.
Same old Arsenal, always self-defeating.
I’m tired. I’m angry. I’ve seen this far too much over this season. It was evident even as we beat West Ham at the start of the season, and while it has threatened to leave, it’s always returned just like that crazy ex who simply will not fuck off.
I started this blog and then just stopped, pretty sure that my mind was on strike. After all, how many times can you ask one brain to come up with yet another blog about how Arsenal had most of the possession, made a few defensive errors and lost the game? It’s old, and it’s certainly not interesting any more.
So what is there left to say?
Not much that wouldn’t be repeating myself and I’m sure you’ve got plenty better to be doing with your time than listening me repeat the same story. It’s boring Arsenal, and it’s a little bit tiresome as well now.
Two games left, third place still not secure and with Villa at home and Fulham away still to play we can’t say that we are guaranteed any points given that we are currently playing as if we are relegation fodder.
No excuses Arsenal. Simply not good enough.
