There is a myth in football that the big teams get all the decisions. It is usually touted by the managers of the so-called smaller teams especially when they’ve just seen a decision go against them in favour of one of the bigger teams. Those are the decisions which make the news and everyone remembers.
So, it is great news for the fans of the likes of Arsenal, United, Chelsea and City that @deb_decisions run a fantastic site which tallies up all the debatable decisions in a game and provides us with a chance to see just how true this myth really is.
It isn’t very.
Arsenal, United, City and Chelsea all occupy births in the lower third of the table meaning they have had more decisions go against them than the majority of ‘smaller’ clubs. Ask anyone, myself included, and it is likely that we will reply that United get all the decisions, when, in fact, they are actually 18th in the debatable decisions table. Arsenal are 15th, faring better than United, Chelsea and City who are all below them.
Sitting proudly atop of the table are Stoke who have benefited from more debatable decisions than any other team this season to the tune of ten points. Ten points. That’s an amazing amount. They are 8th in the actual table but, had all decisions been given correctly, they’d actually be 16th. That is significant. As is the fact that QPR should be in the drop zone, Arsenal and Spurs should be on the same points tally and Sunderland should be further up the table than the position which got Steve Bruce the sack suggests.
In a season when most people will agree that refereeing standards have become appallingly bad, not for one or two teams, but for them all, it is becoming increasingly clear that positions in the league are being affected by refereeing decisions. We need to educate our referees better in order to prevent this from happening again in the future.
With so much money at stake, video technology can surely be the only way to go.
For the record, United should be five points clear at the top of the table. That’s gotta hurt.

Debatable Decisions use a panel of five judges who all support different teams across a range of leagues. Not to be taken too seriously, though not to be taken too lightly either.)
