Is pissing off to the last degree. A few well-chosen hours of sunlight aside, the entire day in this remote corner of Rajasthan is as bone-chilling as watching Overmars running towards you at full-pelt. No central heating and no adipose have collectively ensured that that I indulge in glum sighs and sad smileys galore at the turn of the New Year. Call it a happy one, mesa dares you.
Before my fingers freeze off, I’ll be darkening this corner of the interwebz with a staccato of thoughts, so f…f…forward march.
The Fulham defeat…
Was frustrating; both because it was our doing, and because it wasn’t our doing. On a day where Lee Probert’s histrionics were partly responsible for our loss, and Frank Lampard scored the winner for Chelsea in a game where he should have been sent off, it was easy to hear a repeated *THUMP* as feet landed on the bandwagon and lots of fingers were pointed at referees for influencing the table.
But on a day where twitter went all of a…twitter, the most logical voice came from the astonishing direction of Alan Hansen, who usually doesn’t let logic touch him with a barge pole. As the racist Scot says- Whatever Arsene Wenger’s complaints are, legitimate and otherwise, this was a game we should have had wrapped up at half-time. We didn’t, and it was our undoing for the second time in under a week after the Wolves game.
Is not exactly like Overmars running towards you at full-pelt. But, as someone rightly pointed out in the post-game twitter explosion, it’s better to laud him for what he brings to the team (palpable danger going forward, a constant outlet on the wings, a decent amount of assists, a leash on their full-back, hard work, advertising space on his forehead) rather than spite him for what he doesn’t (goals).
I’m aware that the only thing he doesn’t bring is what lost us the game on Monday, and it is the only thing that makes the brass buttons shine in the end, but from missing an open net to not missing it is but a simple step. Let’s hope he makes that step soon, because he’s doing so many other things right.
What do I think of the move? It’s good in all the usual senses of the word, with off-field morale boosts, trophy-winning know-how, experience and other intangible paraphernalia being bandied about. It’s an underwhelming move in some senses, eliciting a feeling of being *too* stop-gap a signing, and one that takes us backwards rather than forwards. Head over to the folks at The Hard Tackle and have a peek at a more fulsome appraisal from moi.
Hmmmm. That is the only thing I can say without getting dragged into one party or the other. Let it be known that this Hmmmm was not one of pleasure or disdain; it was as neutral as Switzerland.
In this case, I’m as deeply-seated in one party as can be. Spurs are doing okay at the moment, so the best thing to do is hark back to a sunnier time when they used to fall to the red-and-white sword again and again.
And again. That shiny link is a piece I did on The Arsenal Collective about our 3-1 victory at White Hart Lane in the 2007-08 season. Refresh memories, and so forth.
Are historically tough opponents for us, with both teams having a very equal win record when they’ve faced off. Last year’s game at the corresponding stage of the competition was definitely a rude kick in the bum, as we needed a last-minute Cesc penalty to salvage a replay. Our showing was considerably better at Elland Road, but this creaking unit doesn’t need another game added to its burgeoning fixture list, and I’d rather we finished off the business here itself.
Chamakh will probably play, he’s in ACN limbo. Gervinho is off to frustrate Africa. We’ll find out what this ‘Park’ thingamajig is that Wenger keeps talking about. We’ll also see if it’s possible to conjure a full-back out of the bare elements.
I think that will be enough, for I have turned into a snowman. Finally, a legitimate excuse for the carrot-nose!
