I like it when we don’t have to wait too long for Arsenal games. I’m sure the players could probably do with a few extra days, but for fans, playing on Wednesday then Saturday is as about as good as it gets. If I had my way we’d play every day. Then again, I don’t know if my blood pressure could stand it.
Today Arsenal take on Aston Villa on the back of six straight wins in all competitions and a seventh would be most welcome to keep our grip on third place. Villa, on the other hand, come in to this game on the back of only one win in their last five league games, at home to Fulham, and while Arsenal have scored an average of 2.6 goals per game in the last five, Villa have only managed 0.6. All signs should point to a home banker.
But we know football isn’t as straightforward as that. Complacency can creep in and cause all sorts of problems and it’s something I feel this time might finally got a handle on.
Team news is encouraging with everyone coming through the Everton match unscathed so I’m unsure if we’ll see any sort of rotation to keep things fresh or if Arsene will stick with the same 11 which performed so well at Goodison.
Speaking to Arsenal.com Wenger has been talking about how the team are ‘just in the mood to concentrate on the next game’ and it would be nice after what seemed like fighting against the odds in our last load of games if we could achieve a nice, simple, straightforward win. A 3-nil professionally acquired without the need of stupid pills or anti-anxiety meds would be appreciated, but I’ll take another 1-0 like we grabbed on Wednesday or even a 2-1 like against Newcastle. The points are the imperative, and while it’s always great to tie them to a superb performance, at this time of the season points win prizes not necessarily performances.
Wenger continued “People questioned our attitude because we lost some games [in January] from leading situations at Fulham and Swansea. Recently it has been the reverse. But in the Fulham game, we’d played Saturday-Monday, finished with ten men and had no full-backs at the time. Since then we have more options and a bit better plan. That has allowed the team to feel more confident.” Confidence breeds confidence and while we have grabbed a lot of points late on that isn’t luck, its determination. There is a reason that United win so many games at the death and that is because Ferguson’s sides never give up. That’s what we are starting to see from this Arsenal side and it is a truly wonderful thing.
I predict that we will see that straightforward win today, but I’m rarely right with these things so I wouldn’t really pay attention to that. I can’t see our winning run being halted today and if we get our attitude aligned with our application we could conceivable win quite comfortably. Don’t and all bets are off.
100% once again will equal three points. It really is that simple.
