Tonight the long, wet summer gets a little bit brighter as Arsenal finally take to the field to kick off their pre-season programme taking part in the Markus Lieherr Memorial Cup at St. Mary’s, Southampton’s home ground.
The mini-tournament, which will feature three games lasting 45 minutes each, will see Arsenal play Anderlecht kicking off at 6.45pm and then playing Southampton at 8pm and gives us all a chance to see Arsenal back in action even if it is a team missing quite a number of big name players. Those who played at the Euro’s are still not back in training.
As always, pre-season friendlies don’t really tell us much. They are solely to get players up to speed in time for the season start but there’s no denying that they bring a little bit of excitement to the summer and signal the closing in of the new season.
Of course, the main talking points this season has, yet again, revolved around Arsenal’s star player and the fact that he wants away. As we discussed when RvP made his statement, he’s burnt his bridges and I can’t see how he can play any role in the upcoming season despite Arsenal seeming to want to hold him to the final year of his deal. Let him go and let’s get on with the players who want to pull on the Arsenal shirt.
Theo still hasn’t signed a new deal either and you have to think that the longer it drags on the less likely he is to sign. He’s another player who owes Arsenal but thinks he is something more than he actually is. We stood by him when he suffered his repeated injury problems, didn’t give up on him when he had shoulders that popped out of their sockets in a strong breeze and after one full, relatively injury-free season, he’s starting to think the grass is greener elsewhere. Of course, that’s speculation that that’s what he thinks, but if he wasn’t shopping around what’s his hold up in signing a new deal? I’d like him to sign, but if he doesn’t it won’t devastate me and I’d be fairly sure he’ll join the long list of players who end up regretting leaving Arsenal. That being said, he’d been talking about looking forward to the Asian tour, so who the hell knows.
Speaking to Arsenal Player, Theo said
“I am dead excited – it is great to see the fans. It means lot to them because they never really get to see us in person.
“As players we get to see a different side to the game, seeing fans who may never be able to come to Emirates. It makes their dreams come true and that is what we want to do.
“They love the Club so much, they love the players and they want to be close to us. They’re proper fans and all want the Club to do well. It is fantastic for us to see another side of it.”
Hurry up and sign so you can enjoy it even more eh Theo?
Transfer-wise we’ve not seen any movement on any other players other than the two we snagged quite early on. I don’t know if we will bring in any more. Any news and gossip can be found on LadyArse Gossip as soon as it breaks so keep an eye over there.
Now that Arsenal are back that should signal a return to daily blogging but I’m making no promises other than I’ll try. The gossip site is updated daily though and I have a new site, InjuryLeague.com which is bringing you all the Premier League injury news for every club in the league as well as the one and only injury league so check that out as well.
If you’ve been having problems accessing this site on your work computer using the URLS globalgooners.com and gossip.globalgooners.com should sort that problem for you.
