You win some, Giroud some

Perhaps I should have saved that headline for a day when we won and Giroud scored, but it was simply too good not to use today and, of course, Giroud is being talked about so it seemed to fit. But I’m not going to talk about him. He missed two great chances, but the goals will come, of that I’m sure. Today it was not about one man, it was about a team which played together and defended as if a clean sheet had, once again, became a personal point of pride for the whole squad.

It was great to see and nothing epitomised this new Arsenal defence than when Koscielny replaced Vermaelen as Arsenal were defending a corner and a number of Arsenal players screamed and pointed at him until he stood exactly where he was supposed to go.  Steve Bould. I wouldn’t ignore him either. Vermaelen, by the way, should be alright according to Wenger post match. His injury? The result of a Gerrard lunge which even Liverpool fans said was dangerous.  A lunge that didn’t even warrant a free kick according to Howard Webb who had saw fit to book Mertesacker for running alongside Suarez as Suraez threw himself to the ground. Ho hum, that’s how it goes at Anfield I suppose.

By this point last season, as I’m sure you all know, we had lost two and conceded ten. This year we stand as the only team in all four divisions yet to concede a goal and against the first footballing side we have encountered this season,  we simply bossed the game.

In the middle of the park Arteta, Cazorla and Diaby were simply magnificent. Diaby took huge strides to silencing many of his doubters with a man of the match display which saw him described as ‘majestic.’ Santi sprayed balls about the park with such ease that drooling seems to be the standard response when he’s got the ball and for his efforts he got a goal and an assist. He’s now created ten goalscoring opportunities since he arrived in the Premier League. That’s joint top if you’re counting.

Podolski simply seems to love playing with Cazorla, the two of them playing passes to each other like long lost lovers who have just been reunited and it was Santi who set up Podolski whose finish was only matched by the passion he showed in his celebration.

As I watched the game in Lavery’s Bar, Belfast, I was surrounded by Liverpool fans, the Arsenal fans who’d been there for the last match I was at clearly still working off their hangovers.  It was quite eye opening. As I’d long suspected, Scousers see the body as one giant hand, screaming for handball whenever the ball touched an Arsenal player, and when a 50:50 ball was in play their reaction, time and time again was ‘hit him’.  A classy bunch no doubt.

As regular readers will know I am a strong Wenger supporter but even I found myself doubting the policy of not reinforcing more during the transfer window. I can see clearly why we didn’t in midfield, with Rosicky still to come back and Wenger confirming pre-match that he’s had some good news about Wilshere. Up front I still wonder will we be ok should we suffer an injury, but I guess we just deal with that if it happens. No point worrying about it now.

I’m not sure many people outside Arsenal put us down for such a performance at Anfield today, and I know for a fact that many Arsenal fans didn’t think that Diaby was capable of what he displayed today – I had an argument about him last week as I tried to defend him and the player he could be if he could just get past him injury problems which are mostly related to that Dan Smith tackle.  Today was a good day.  Let’s hope that it is the first of many this season. I think we’ve all earned it – Wenger, Diaby and the Arsenal fans. Oh. And if today wasn’t good enough already, Wenger hinted very strongly he’d be signing a new deal, you can read about that here.

What Giroud movement for first goal to create space, dont mock this player, he is a real smart player

    • ladyarse

I never mocked him once and if you’d bothered to even read the first paragraph you’d have seen that I said he’d come good.

      • Belhop17

Was just stating how his movement is great, love your posts, i meant as statement to all football fans about him(he will be great)-keep up the great posts

        • ladyarse

Sorry, I was snappy….no need for you to apologies

  • alistair

good article … high time you stopped all those shit stirring gossips

    • ladyarse

How are they shit stirring when I’m taking gossip that’s in the paper and highlighting how it isn’t true?

  • Tc1168

The goals will come for Giroud. His overall performance, link up play and movement was outstanding. He is not a Chamakh! Speaking of which is he injured? Strange he wasn’t included on the bench.

    • ladyarse

I’m not sure where either him or Arshavin were but the windows are still open in Turkey (Chamakh) and Russia. You’re right, he’s certainly nothing like Chamakh.

      • Tc1168

Thanks for reply. Hadn’t realised Turkish window was still open. Have a feeling we might keep him till Jan though.. Arshavin may go sooner.
I wonder if the sticking point with Walcott is where he wants to play in the team and that we may see him in a more central role albeit from the bench..

        Great post by the way.

Good article, Ladyarse. Like you I am mainly concerned about attack now – not the lack of quality up there, just the lack of cover for Podolski & Giroud. The former works like a Trojan and can finish too; the latter played well overall, and if he keeps finding the space for chances, they will eventually start going in. Must admit I’m one of Diaby’s detractors, but to give the man his due, he was superb today, especially in the first half. Whisper it quietly – because it is such early days – but the defence looks pretty good, which has something to do with the shape of the whole side in front of the back four when they need to defend. Wonder who’s influence that might be down to? Mannone’s shot-stopping looked good, but he’s uncertain about the high balls. The only weakish link in the side today was the Ox I thought: he really struggled to get into the game or even to retain the ball when it came his way. But overall, this was a very encouraging day.

Diaby is beast! followed him in the french national team and the ‘occasional’ match he played for arsenal he showed the same rampant performance never doubted his ability on the pitch just his strength to stay on it! Giroud’s goals will come, his movements excellent just needs to get that service and he’ll get the scoring boots on!!! COYG

BREAKING NEWS: Heartbreaking news today as Manchester United lose one of it’s most beloved characters, the letter M.

Reports are stating that the two legs of the “M” have fallen off and
just left a V, leaving the once global name of “Manchester United” to
    appear “Vanchester United”.

A close source is quoted as saying “The V looks wobbly as it has
nothing holding it up and it is only a matter of time before it falls”.

    Great post, LA.

      Cheers :)

i just think giroud has awful instincts in positional play for stiker he moves to positions were he marked instead finding space better than charmarkh by a neck! ha

    • ltbrock

I prefer a team not reliant on one player for goals actually.

    • OMGARSENAL

Stop whining Edwin….Wenger has more Football nous in his shoelaces than you do in your entire whiny, moaning body! Giroud is far ahead of Chanakh in that his positioning is actually very clever but his finishing is still out of sync…he will score and quite often…so crawl back into your gloomy closet!

Just to put a dampener on things – I think there are still a few problems that need ironing out. Some of our passing in our defensive third in the first half was woeful and could have easily been punished, Mannone is awful under the high ball and our crossing was poor. All that aside we played with some Arsenal swagger today, I think the team looks to be geling. Fingers crossed for the break.

Defence looks good and disciplined. Now all we have to do is figure out how to deal with teams that park the bus and we’re good to go (hint: tactics effective at Anfield is not likely to work against such opposition). And trust me many teams will be parking the bus at the Emirates.

Giroud is going to be fantastic. You can see that he has it all and its only a matter of time before the goal come. Very happy for Diaby, even if he won’t commit to the 50/50 tackles anymore, great display and he deserves the plaudits. All looking good for this season unlike some others (one man team Man U).

    • ltbrock

I think this was due more to the yellow card than anything else. He had to be cautious.

      • pop

I would hate to see him get injured again. Don’t think he got a yellow, only Mert and Arteta had a yellow card. I expected Mert to get sent off as Suarez is a cheating so and so. Did not happen thankfully.
