We all know that feeling don’t we?
The other day I was in Tesco, strolling aimlessly down the isles whilst quietly perusing the overpriced vegetables that they had on display that day. As I amusingly remarked to myself that this country’s obesity crisis is not going to get any better with those prices, I turned the corner and it smacked me in the face. Gone.
Gone was the world food section, and in it’s place was what I can only begrudgingly describe as the ‘Christmas Section’. Crackers, advent calenders and wrapping paper stood instaead of hot sauce, noodles and Ting. It’s that time of year already, where we claim with great authority that it’s that time of the year already. Whilst the middle of October may not be too early to discuss what Christmas presents I’m not going to buy anyone, it surely must be too early to discuss Arsene’s transfer ideas for the January transfer window?
Well, you tell that to the national press this morning, who seem to have caught wind of some inside information and exposed it in their usual vulgar way. Has one reporter snuck into Arsene’s office, probably whilst he’s out treating Steve Bould to an ice cream for drilling the defence so well, and stolen his January Wishlist? Obviously they’ve got some top secret info, because apparently we’re looking at signing one of Jovetic, Llorrente, Falcao or Lopez. That’s just four I could be bothered to name.
Now before the I Told You So crew start to flex their infantile like muscles at me for apparently showing a lack of ambition as a supporter, let me just begin by saying I would wholeheartedly love Arsenal to make this type of signing in January. I remember the feeling of finally signing Andrei Arshavin on that wonderful deadline day all those years ago, a world class player arriving in January felt god-sent and his performances in the immediate aftermath of being signed were truly orgasmic.
May be years of reading articles like these, that have then turned out to be fallacy, have made me slightly cynical. May be now, when I look at articles that have no direct quotes from anyone involved with the club and which also just seem to throw about the same names that everyone else throws around every window, I just want to ignore said articles stating that we’ll splurge £35million pounds on one player. Is that wrong?
On Saturday in the pub I had a conversation with a Sheffield United fan which went the same way as every single conversation that I, and I’m sure every other Arsenal fan, has with someone who doesn’t support Arsenal.
Why don’t Arsenal just spend some money?
We did. We bought three internationals this season. Santi Cazorla’s a bargain.
Why don’t you just cough up £40 million pounds for a world class player. Then you’ll win the league?
We don’t do that. We work on a self-sustaining model etc etc
Yeah well it’s not gonna win you any trophies, is it?
Bore off mate. You’re boring.
Every week I have that conversation with someone, and it’s even more distressing if this someone also claims to support Arsenal But with news that we’ve a healthy set of end of year figures, Arsenal FC fans and Football Manager addicts the world over will be looking to Arsene to flex that financial muscle in January.
And yes whilst I agree that a striker will be needed as we turn the corner into the final flings of the coming season, it will not be easy to prise these quality players away from their clubs in January which is infamously famous for being a hard transfer window to sign quality players.
But we shall see. Let’s just hope the players we have at the club come home from international duty in one piece and we add to Chris Houghton’s woes against Norwich. That’s all I’m focussed on for the moment, and I hope it goes the same for Arsene.
I love Arsenal,
and I love you too.
