Taunts of “You only blog when you’re winning” would appear true on the surface of it, and for that I apologise wholeheartedly for being a glory hunting writer. A writer that seems eternally grateful for the opportunity to bask in the glorious sunshine of victory, yet incapable of writing on a rainy, wintery day in Stoke. That is not entirely the case, major personal life changes restricting the amount of time I have in front of a computer on a daily basis which not only harms my blogging but other personal activities that I like to participate in.
Yet there is an element of truth into the claims that I only like to blog when we’re winning. To pick myself up out of the bi-polar like depression I immerse myself into post defeat to then articulate into words just why Arsenal are so rubbish these days is not a feat easily achieved. But it’s not simply a case of Ican’tbearsedness.
Every paper you pick up is full ex pros slating the football team that we love, rightly so in theory as questions should be asked about a team of our stature, of our high standing in the modern game whatever others will have you believe. However, let’s take a moment to really assess WHO is making these statements.
I read an article the other day in which Terry Venables said Arsene Wenger, instead of asking for £50million to spend on January transfers, should ask for £150million to spend on January transfers.
:/
Let’s make no mistake whatsoever, Arsene Wenger needs to take the crowbar to the preverbial wallet and show some clubs around the Premier League and Europe the fabric of his fibre. The squad needs an injection a la Arshavin 2009 and it needs it badly. However, to say that Arsene Wenger needs to effectively undo all the prudence of the last seven years to start being a good manager is absolute tripe. I’m sorry. This isn’t Football Manager. This is real life, and our problems can’t all be solved by throwing money at the situation.
In the same paper yesterday, George Graham said that Arsene Wenger had gone down the route of trying to develop players and it hadn’t worked for 15 years. 15 years?! I understand that things are pretty bad right now, but come on. Hyperbolic statements are all well and good, but let’s get some factual foundations behind them before we start spouting tripe.
The point I’m trying to make is this. We’re all hurting from what’s going down at the moment and we all show it in different ways. Some people like to howl and scream at the top of their voice, the internet as it is today allows anyone to voice an opinion no matter how ridiculous.
However, don’t take the bait from articles written by people whose motives for writing about our football club are murky at best. Crisis, like sex and articles about Lindasay Lohan, sells. There are people out there who are more than happy to poke the bee-hive of Arsenal support to get a reaction. Cause that reaction makes them money, one way or another.
Let’s indulge ourselves in articles which try to articulate the pain of our current plight in ways which aren’t simply to fuel the ire amongst easily swayed fans. If the last couple of months have taught me anything it’s that Arsenal Football Club cannot be the be all and end all in my life. If I took in every article written about Arsenal, and actually cared about them, I would die. Tomorrow. Of a heart attack combined with a killer migraine, combined by chronic diarrhoea.
I’ll be watching the game on Monday and hoping that we win. Not because it would prove me right, as I do believe Wenger is the man to get us out of this situation, which in turn doesn’t make me deluded as some people would have you believe. But I’ll be hoping that Arsenal wins because that’s what makes me happy.
And it’s a damn sight easier to blog about.
I love Arsenal,
and I love you too.
